Being a nurse means being prepared for the unexpected. Here are two types of disasters you may be tested on when you take your NGN!

▪️ Internal disasters refer to events or situations that occur WITHIN a healthcare facility, such as fires, explosions, and equipment/utility failure.

▪️ External disasters are events that occur OUTSIDE of the healthcare facility - in the nearby community. These can be either natural (eg. tornado, hurricane, earthquake) or technological (eg. bombing, radiation exposure, bioterrorism)

Let's talk cirrhosis! As the nurse, it’s important to know the expected assessment findings. Some of the main signs and symptoms you could see include:

▪️Palpable, firm liver in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen
▪️Abdominal swelling and ascites due to fluid accumulation
▪️Abdominal pain, bloating, indigestion, and poor appetite
▪️Spider angiomas due to capillary dilation
▪️Jaundice: Most noticeable in the sclera and mucous membranes
▪️Abnormal labs: ⬇️ serum albumin and ⬆️ serum liver enzymes

Remember to RACE and then PASS when it comes to fire safety ⚠️ questions on the NGN!

If there is a fire…remember that you need to “RACE”!
🔥 R: Rescue anyone in immediate danger
🔥 A: Activate the fire alarm system
🔥 C: Contain the fire by closing doors and windows
🔥 E: Extinguish the fire if possible, or evacuate the area if it's spreading rapidly and poses a threat

And to quickly recall the steps for using a fire extinguisher, just remember “PASS”!
🧯P: Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher. This will break the tamper seal and allow you to discharge the extinguisher.
🧯A: Aim the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire. It's important to aim at the base because that's where the fuel source is!
🧯S: Squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguishing agent. Maintain a firm grip on the handle while doing so!
🧯S: Sweep the nozzle or hose from side to side as you discharge the extinguishing agent. Continue until the fire is completely out!
