Wow is it that long ago!

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the 'Dudh Kosi: Relentless River of Everest' Expedition.

Not only does the anniversary mark 5 decades since Mike Jones, Dave Manby, Mick Hopkinson, John Liddell, Rob Hastings, Roger Huyton, and John Gosling became the first British team to descend the Dudh Kosi, but it also marks half a century since Pyranha created the first kayak specifically designed for whitewater exploration, aptly named the Everest, and the same amount of time since we first sponsored an expedition (and thus formed Team Pyranha).

After 18 months of planning, the team drove from the UK to Kathmandu in July of 1976 in a Transit minibus, then proceeded to hike to Everest Base Camp with all their kayaks and equipment before they even began the business of descending the river.

6 of the kayaks had Spitfire gun cameras mounted on their bows, and this footage formed part of Leo Dickinson’s stunning film of the expedition, watched by eleven million people on the BBC on Boxing Day 1976. You can catch this at Dave Manby 's own film night in Llangollen Town Hall on the 17th of October.

Even on the successful completion of the expedition, there was still the small matter of driving the 7,500 miles back home, with the team returning to the UK 4 months later; not only had the experience changed their lives, but it set in motion Pyranha’s history of relentless innovation in whitewater kayak design and consistently supporting world-class paddlers in achieving the unbelievable, both of which continue to this day.
