A week or so ago I decided that I wasn't coping well with 2 modules this year so I withdrew from one. I kept the one which was more applied in nature. There comes a time when it's best to stick to what you know. Anyway the 2nd score was very encouraging.

How to solve real world problems. This is in need of algebra. The question is about finding Sam's present age; so let us assign this a letter: X. The other part of the problem is his sister's present age; say Y. The first piece of information is that Sam is 10 years older than his sister. So we may write X = Y + 10. The next piece of information involves one year later where we have X + 1 = 2 * ( Y + 1 ) or in words Sam is twice the age of his sister. We can easily make one equation in terms of Y alone i.e. 2 * ( Y + 1 ) - 1 = Y + 10 .
Or 2 * Y + 1 = Y + 10.
Or 2 * Y - Y = 10 - 1
and so Y = 9 . Hence the sister in the beginning is 9 years old and Sam is 19 i.e. 10 years older. I hope this illustrates the usefulness of things that can seem very dry and academic.
I hope you enjoyed your festive season. Perhaps like me you are more than a little pleased to get back to normal, nice though it was to celebrate. I was interested in the Prime Minister's announcement yesterday on extending compulsory maths education to the age of 18. One thing is for sure; math-o-phobia is rife, and in reality whilst being understandable it is mostly un-necessary. Let me be clear: we are talking about sitting down with a blank sheet of paper and working out a household budget, or understanding mortgage repayments. If I could discuss it with Mr Sunak I would suggest putting in place qualifications for home tutors and thus bestowing on them professional status. Then they could be integrated into education with greater ease and efficiency.

Seasons Greetings
Hi. I scored a distinction in my exam last summer with 85%. This year I'm doing 2 modules concurrently and the work is quite challenging. I was awarded 81% and 80% for the pre-Christmas assignments. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a successful and happy new year.
