Parents - it’s natural - we want to help, offer guidance, or even fix their problems ourselves (we care, but maybe we’re also a bit triggered by our child’s struggle/worry)
This ‘need to help’ sometimes gets in the way of what a child really needs - and that’s the space and time to open up, let’s stuff out, express what they’re holding in…without judgement, questions, solutions.
So if your child doesn’t really talk to you or open up to you (at all) or as much as you’d like them to or you know they need to - tell them you’ll just listen and not say a word. You’ll hold the space for them to talk.
Our job is sometimes really simple:
No judgement
No guidance
No solutions or “what you should have dones”
Just listen…
When they trust that you’ll say nothing and just listen…and they tell you more of their inner thoughts and troubles more freely…then you can bring in some empathy and validation…and then ask if they’d like some guidance or help.
Why just listen???
Because often just getting it off your chest can make you feel better. Letting the thoughts out of your head makes them seem less scary.
“A problem shared is a problem halved” 💜
