Braving The Wilderness

Bamboo Workshops
Wilderness Therapy
Nature Play

Operating as usual

I never imagined we'd be leading a primitive fire building workshop in the snow, in March! But what a success it was. Each participant got a fire going from foraged wood, chopped their own kindling and watched their king Alfred mushroom go up in flames. Well done to all who attended. More snaps to follow. πŸ”₯ 🌲

2022 will always be a special year, the year I married my human. I've gained more family members and grown closer to the existing ones. I've made dear new friends and been endlessly supported by my cherished besties. May 2023 continue to nurture those relationships and adventures that bring us pure unadulterated joy. Happy New Year to you and your loved ones. πŸŽ‰

Why not gift an experience this Christmas? We're hosting two primitive fire building workshops in March 2023. Gift your loved one the experience of learning to create fire from flint, friction and even a mushroom. πŸ„ You'll spend the day in the woods drinking freshly brewed coffee, feasting on giant roasted marshmallows and getting 'hands on' creating fire from a range of primitive methods. πŸŽ„ Coming to you from the beautiful Shropshire countryside, just outside the medieval town of Shrewsbury. πŸŽ„ To book your gift voucher contact us on here or via our website.

This week in Wilderness Therapy we have a mighty group of children setting up their own camp. After surviving last week's session in the torrential rain the sure have earned this little gift of winter sunshine. 🌳 πŸ”₯

We've had lots of interest in our Braving The Wilderness t-shirts. They have a large logo on the back, a pocket sized logo on the front and are made from the softest organic fabric. If you'd like to order some then send us a direct message with your chosen colour and size and we'll get making them. T-shirts are all unisex, Β£20 plus Β£2 p+p if not local. Tie dye is an option too. πŸ‘• 🎨 🌲

A productive weekend creating signage and staff shirts. What do you think?

Is there anything more relaxing than deep and meaningful chats around the fire.... and are they more therapeutic if you've started said fire with a mushroom and an ember? Thoughts?

Fire from friction, is my happy place.

...and into the forest we go, to loose our mind and find our soul. (John Muir) ...and here I'll stay all week to finish off my Wilderness Therapy qualification. ❀️

My summer leading a pioneering q***r backpacking program for . How healing being out on trail with q***r youth. Taking time in nature to reflect on your identity, bond with others in your community and help create the next generation of q***r leaders. They were an inspirational bunch and I can't wait to bring some of this magic back to folks in the UK.

A little snippet of summer in California leading a backpacking program for LGBTQ+ youth. I'm 36 and have never spent time in a space exclusively for q***r humans and allies before. What a refreshing experience to be out in nature exploring this concept. We're teaching wilderness/ backpacking skills just off of the Pacific Creat Trail now and tomorrow we'll hit the trail, disconnect from the world and hike. 🌲

How do you like our new logo?

It's been a wild ride these past two years moving my life from Asia to Europe. Adjusting to different climates both culturally and horticulturally. Working though how to integrate the passion and knowledge I've grown surrounding bamboo into a temperate climate. Climate change is real and I never want to stop spreading knowledge of bamboo and it's super powers. The world has to hear them.

It feels like this summer all of the manifesting, dreaming and research has paid off and after a windy ol' road I'm so happy that from September Bamboo Workshops and Wilderness Therapy combining bamboo and bushcraft will commence. 🌳

My human, you inspire me everyday. ❀️

This feels like the one... majestic woodland with space to plant bamboo. Keep your fingers crossed for us. 🌳 πŸ”πŸŽ‹

What a wonderful weekend out exploring new potential workshop spaces in the wild.

You might start seeing a few changes on here as we move away from 100% bamboo related content to a focus on creating wild education programs for different groups including teens and adults with additional needs, attachment, or trauma, q***r youth and adults and those wanted simply to escape the city and retreat back to nature. However, bamboo will always be deeply entwined in the work that we do. Here's a snap of todays sight visit in north wales. 🌲

Think this sums up my week of wilderness therapy training nicely. Deep nature immersion, connecting to myself and my culture and transferring lots of bushcraft skills from a tropical to a temperate climate. Happy, happy heart. ❀️ 🌲 πŸ”

This week I'm in the woods studying . Such a grounding experience mixing pedagogy, therapeutic approaches and bushcraft. Oh nature, what a wonder you are. 🌲

Kettle brewing, fire built now let's study some wilderness therapy. πŸ”₯ 🌲

Carving away the final nugget of birch from the bowl. 🌳 πŸͺ“

The beginning of the birch bowl. First we sourced a semi green birch log. Cut off a section without cracks or knots and axed it in half before using the axe to shape the log into a semi circle. Thai bamboo = machete, English birch = axe. Same, same but different. Lots of interesting chats about sustainable wood especially around ash wood in the UK. 80% of ash trees need to be chopped down here, due to a disease called ash dieback. Meaning, there’s lots of ash wood to tinker with. πŸͺ“ 🌳

A day of bowl turning from birch wood. Yikes, lots of hard work goes into bowl turning with traditional hand tools from the days of the vikings. We used a wooden lathe hand made by the wonderful crafter .mateo, a bowl turning, ash-wood weaving inspiration. 🌳πŸ₯£πŸ—‘πŸͺš

Happy Earth Day 2022. May nature continue to fill our hearts with joy each and every day! πŸŽ‹πŸŒπŸ¦†
