We’re delighted to recognise Abigail Walshe from Acorns Day Nursery for her outstanding commitment to professional development, passion for early years education and exceptional achievements throughout her apprenticeship journey.

Abigail has successfully completed her Level 2, Level 3 and Level 5 qualifications in Childcare, achieving Distinctions across all three levels! 👏 Her dedication to continuous learning and developing her knowledge and skills is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through apprenticeships.

Throughout her journey, Abigail has consistently demonstrated professionalism, determination and a genuine passion for providing high-quality care and education. Are employers ready to recruit someone entering work for the first time?

Young people still want to work. But the route from wanting an opportunity to actually getting one can be harder than it looks.

The 2026 Youth Voice Census (https://hubs.li/Q04Bn3vD0) found that 67% of 17-19-year-olds are likely or very likely to apply for a job as their next step, while lack of work experience remains a major barrier.

The interim Young People and Work review describes a weakening of the first rung into employment.

It also challenges the idea that youth employment can be solved simply by making young people more “work-ready”.

The next phase of the conversation is about solutions.

At Youth, Skills and the First Rung, we’ll ask:

- What could it mean for future skills and employment policy for 16–24-year-olds?

Young people still want to work.

The 2026 Youth Voice Census found that 67% of 17-19-year-olds are likely or very likely to apply for a job as their next step.

But ambition does not automatically become opportunity.

Young people also describe barriers around experience, anxiety, local opportunities and whether employers will consider them.

That raises an important question: Are we spending too much time asking whether young people are ready for work and not enough asking what it takes to create the right first opportunity?

We’ll explore that with Lauren Mistry, Deputy CEO at Youth Employment UK, alongside Paul Stannard from AELP, hosted by our Chief Commercial Officer Matt Robinson.
