Are employers ready to recruit someone entering work for the first time?

Young people still want to work. But the route from wanting an opportunity to actually getting one can be harder than it looks.

The 2026 Youth Voice Census (https://hubs.li/Q04Bn3xp0) found that 67% of 17-19-year-olds are likely or very likely to apply for a job as their next step, while lack of work experience remains a major barrier.

👏 Congratulations to all our partners featured in this year’s Family Business United Apprentice Employers Report 2026!

We’re delighted to see Shepherd Neame, JW Lees, Harrison Catering Services and Robinsons Brewery recognised for their commitment to apprenticeships and workforce development. Their inclusion reflects the values at the heart of family businesses – investing in people, creating opportunities and supporting the communities they serve.

The 2026 report showcases the impressive achievements of 27 leading family businesses, which collectively employ 28,388 people, including 1,087 apprentices. During the year, these businesses welcomed 518 new apprentices, while 315 successfully completed their apprenticeship programmes.

At HIT Training, we see every day the difference apprenticeships make. They help businesses grow their own talent, tackle skills shortages, improve retention and create genuine career opportunities for people who may not always have had a clear route into work.

The Milburn Review has diagnosed the problem. What should come next?

The interim Young People and Work review describes a weakening of the first rung into employment.

It also challenges the idea that youth employment can be solved simply by making young people more “work-ready”.

The next phase of the conversation is about solutions.

At Youth, Skills and the First Rung, we’ll ask:
- What should the final Milburn report address?
- What could it mean for future skills and employment policy for 16–24-year-olds?
- And if policy increasingly prioritises younger people, what might that mean for apprenticeships and skills development for those aged 25+?

For today’s theme during Hospitality Apprenticeships Week 2026, we’re sharing Joe Cullin’s journey from bar management to becoming a Head Brewer.

A brewery experience day sparked Joe’s interest in making b**r. That passion led him to a Level 4 Brewer Apprenticeship with HIT Training, which he completed with a distinction. 🌟

As his knowledge and confidence grew, Joe took responsibility for running a brewery, going on to put his skills into practice as Head Brewer, with his b**rs earning an award at the SIBA North West B**r Awards. 🏆

With support from his colleagues, mentor and HIT Training, Joe developed the confidence to take his career in a new direction and prepare to mentor an apprentice himself.

His story shows how discovering a new interest in hospitality can open up a career path you hadn’t considered.

Katie progressed through management roles across retail and hospitality, gaining experience in operations, people management and customer service. Confident in running day-to-day operations, she wanted to strengthen her strategic leadership skills to thrive at senior management level.

Through her apprenticeship, Katie has broadened her perspective, developed her leadership approach and continued growing as a confident, forward-thinking General Manager. 🙌

Her journey shows that apprenticeships can support leaders at different stages of their careers - helping experienced managers build on their strengths and develop the skills to lead their teams and businesses forward.
