Strong Women of Sherborne
On BBC Radio 3, The Essay begins a series of programmes about female electronic pioneers.

In the first programme composers Hannah Peel and Marta Salogni look at the life and work of Old Girl Daphne Oram (1925-2003), the inventor, composer and co-founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. During her time at the Radiophonic Workshop Daphne worked on various projects including the theme tune for Quatermass and the Pit (1958-59) and the sound effects for Major Bloodnok’s stomach for The Goon Show.

Daphne’s work at the Radiophonic Workshop paved the way for Delia Derbyshire who arrived the year after she left and went on to co-create the iconic theme music for the BBC TV series Doctor Who. Delia Derbyshire features in the second programme in the series BBC Radio 3 - The Essay, Electronic Women, Delia Derbyshire

Daphne Oram K'43 studied piano, organ and musical composition whilst at school.

The leavers from 1985 had a great evening at their 40 Year Reunion at The Clarence, Dover Street, London. It was so good to catch up with everyone.

We also held a Law Careers Event, kindly hosted at Hill Dickinson LLP. This was an equally valuable event especially for our younger alumni.

We have had a very busy term so far! In September we held a City & Finance Careers Event. This was kindly hosted by Sarasin & Partners LLP. It was a great event and everyone enjoyed talking to other alumni working or thinking of working in this sector.

Old Girl, Alice Cave hikes in memory of her father. Alice writes: " Five weeks ago, I set off from my home in East Devon to walk over 750 miles to the Scottish Highlands in memory of my late father, John Cave, who died at just 59 — and in honour of everyone else we’ve lost too soon.

I'm pleased to report that, 36 days, 15 counties, and 550 miles later, I’ve reached Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland and have raised £35,435 of my £50,000 target for Sidmouth Hospice, Devon Mind, RABI (farming), National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society, and the Royal British Legion — all charities close to my father's heart.

The terrain and weather are becoming more challenging as I head further north — but the people are getting friendlier and the beer is getting better, so you win some, you lose some!

There are just three weeks to go before I (hopefully!) cross the finish line at Glen Etive — a special place for our family, near Glencoe".

We had a fantastic evening at the Property Networking and Careers Drinks held at Savills, Margaret Street, London, on Tuesday 3 September. Over 30 Old Shirburnians and Sherborne Old Girls from various industries and generations came together for a night of networking and reconnecting. It was wonderful to see so many connections made and shared experiences across the years. Our heartfelt thanks to James Higham (m 94) and Savills for their generous hospitality.
Next up is our Tech Networking and Careers Event at C**t Technology, 20 Great Eastern Street, on Wednesday 11 September. Old Girl Sally Ellyatt has been in touch to let us know about the devastation caused recently by Hurricane Beryl. She is working with a local pastor to help raise funds to restore medical services on the island of Cariacou, where there is no fresh drinking water and electricity.
