Leweston School For news from the Prep School follow Leweston’s values are based upon a supportive Catholic ethos.

Situated in 46 acres of stunning Dorset parkland, just south of Sherborne, Leweston is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school and Sixth Form. Leweston offers an academic education in an environment which is both stimulating and inspiring. Expectations are high; pupils are challenged in their studies to achieve the best possible academic success, and Leweston pupils are well-balanced young people who take their place in the world with confidence. They go on to contribute to society in many different ways reflecting the many and varied opportunities placed before them at school. Our motto, 'Gaudere et Bene Facere' - 'Rejoice and Do Well' dates from the seventeenth century and applies to pupils and staff alike. It suggests not only that if something is worth doing, it is worth doing well, but also that it is worth doing in the right frame of mind, one which is positive, outgoing and cheerful.

⛵🏆 REGATTA SUCCESS! 🏆⛵

Huge congratulations to our Leweston sailors, who have been crowned overall winning school at the Portland Autumn Regatta! 🎉

Our team of six, from Year 7 to Year 12, took on some of the best school sailing teams around, and came out on top:
🥇 One of our boats took 1st place overall
🥈 Another finished 2nd place overall
💪 Our other two sailors provided brilliant support and valuable points for the team

What a fantastic achievement against such high-calibre competition. We are so proud of every one of you! 👏

What an amazing first half of the autumn term we have had! There have been so many sporting highlights, from our cross country teams and netballers qualifying for the next rounds of their competitions, to our riders achieving a fantastic collection of results across Dressage, Show Jumping and Combined Training, with several qualifying certificates secured for the NSEA National Championships in October.

Away from the pitches, our boarders have enjoyed fabulous weekend activities, our Nepal expedition training has begun, and the school has been full of music, creativity and delicious food from our Leiths students.

We wish all of our pupils, families and staff a very happy and restful half term. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on 2 November for the second half of term, with lots more to look forward to!

Enjoy the break! 🧡

Behind every great SEN department is a team who care deeply, and this week that team was recognised nationally.

Mrs Davis and Ms Buckland attended the Law Society in London on Wednesday where Leweston was one of six finalists in the SEND Provision category at the Independent Schools of the Year Awards.

Although the award went to Sir William Perkins School - congratulations to them - reaching the final is a tremendous achievement. Thank you to Mrs Davis, Ms Buckland and our IN team for their dedication, and to our students, who are the reason we do it all.

🏸 Congratulations to Luke! 🏆
Luke competed in the Somerset County Badminton Championships, and what a day he had!
🥇 Under 15 Singles County Champion (title retained!)
🥇 Under 15 Doubles County Champion
🥇 Under 17 Mixed Doubles County Champion
🥈 Under 17 Singles Runner-up
🥈 Under 17 [doubles event] Runner-up
All of this came in a single afternoon, with Luke on court almost continuously for five hours. It was a phenomenal effort, and with just a moment to catch his breath between matches, he might well have added another title!

Well done, Luke. We’re all very proud of you! 👏

🎨🌊 Year 10 Art and Design in Cornwall!

Three days of creativity, inspiration and adventure! Our Year 10 students explored the Eden Project, tackled England’s fastest zip line, visited the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden and Tate St Ives, took part in workshops at the Jackson Foundation, and even met a curious seal at Priest’s Cove! 🦭

The trip gave students a wealth of first-hand inspiration, from sketchbook studies and photography to practical workshops, all of which will feed into their ongoing GCSE work. We are immensely proud of how thoughtfully they engaged with every experience and how wonderfully they represented Leweston. Thank you, Cornwall!

📖✨ Celebrating National Poetry Day at Leweston! ✨📖

This National Poetry Day, our school came alive with words, rhythm and imagination as we explored the theme of ‘Think Big’.

🎤 Year 7 Poetry Slam
Our Year 7 students were invited to compose their own poems or choose a favourite to perform in a Poetry Slam. We were delighted by the number of enthusiastic participants, who presented their work with thought, confidence and rhythm. Our Sixth Form judges had a very tough job choosing the prize winners, so you’ll have to wait a little longer! The results will be announced after half term.

📚 Poetry Assembly
Staff and Sixth Form students also joined in the celebrations, sharing a selection of their own favourite poems with the whole school in our Poetry Assembly.

A big thank you to everyone who took part, and congratulations to all our Year 7 performers on their brave and brilliant performances. 👏

Our Sixth Form students had a brilliant time at the latest Anchor & Buzzard Sixth Form social, which saw the Drawing Room transformed for the occasion.

Everyone looked fantastic in their fancy dress, and the creativity and effort on show were wonderful to see. Huge congratulations to our winners! 🏆

Students enjoyed delicious food and drink, a quiz organised by the students themselves, and plenty of music to keep the atmosphere buzzing all night.

Thank you to everyone who helped make it such a memorable evening. We can’t wait for the next one!

🎉 Wacky and Clashy Day 🎉

A huge well done to all our students and staff who came to school yesterday dressed for the occasion! The colours, patterns and creativity on show were brilliant, and it was fantastic to see everyone getting into the spirit of the day. 🌈👕

Your efforts helped raise vital funds for Nepal. Money from our morning cake sales will go to our sister school, Jana Jyoti in Nepal, who are helping with the natural disasters in their country. 💙
Together, Leweston Prep and Senior students have raised over £900! 🙌

A special shout out goes to Year 13 for their fantastic work organising and running the event. Your hard work, enthusiasm and leadership made the day a huge success. 👏

Thank you to everyone who donated, baked, bought a cake or joined in the fun. Together, we’re making a real difference! ❤️

Last week, our very first St Francis Award certificates were presented in assembly! ✨

The award celebrates students who live out the values of St Francis through kindness, compassion, respect, service, inclusion and resilience. It’s not about grades or trophies. It’s about how we treat one another.
Holding a door open. Including someone sitting alone. Quietly helping without being asked.

Congratulations to all our nominees. We’re very proud of you! Enjoy your reward and special privilege this week.

Small actions. Real kindness.

Our Year 12 historians have been exploring the changing nature of warfare, with a focus on the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. A conflict like this one shows how quickly military technology, tactics and strategy were evolving in the nineteenth century.

To bring the topic to life, a member of staff kindly brought in a Chassepot r***e, the breech-loading weapon that equipped the French army and was a significant technological advance of its day. Mr Paget-Tomlinson’s class had the chance to look closely at this remarkable historical artefact under careful supervision.

Long retired from service, this deactivated antique offered students a closer look at the technology behind the history. They asked thoughtful questions about its design and considered how advances in weaponry helped shape the course of the war.

Handling real objects from the past is a powerful way for students to connect with the history they study, and it sparks excellent discussion and deeper understanding.
