Good observation and anticipation are essential skills when driving.

In this situation, the vehicle pulls out and blocks our path, meaning we have to slow down and adjust our speed safely.

Situations like this can develop quickly, which is why itโ€™s important to constantly scan ahead, anticipate what other road users might do and be prepared to react without panic.

Itโ€™s not just about reacting when something happens. Good driving is about recognising potential hazards early and giving yourself enough time and space to deal with them safely.

Would you have spotted this happening and reacted in time?

Moor Street โ†’ St Maryโ€™s Gate

In this video, weโ€™re travelling from Moor Street towards St Maryโ€™s Gate and taking the 3rd exit at the roundabout.

Roundabouts can be challenging when youโ€™re unfamiliar with the road layout, especially when you need to identify the correct lane, position correctly and plan your exit early.

This isnโ€™t a driving test route, but itโ€™s a useful section of road for anyone driving around Sheffield.

Would you know which lane you need for the 3rd exit?

M1 Junction 39 Northbound towards Wakefield.

This junction can be confusing if youโ€™re unsure which lane you need for the 3rd exit.

As you approach the roundabout, make sure youโ€™re in the correct lane early and follow the road markings and signs. For this route, take the middle lane on the approach and continue around the roundabout for the 3rd exit towards Wakefield.

Planning ahead, good lane discipline and checking your signs and road markings can make a big difference, especially when approaching larger and busier roundabouts.

Would you know which lane you need for the 3rd exit?

A moment from a driving lesson that highlights just how quickly a situation can develop on the road.

In this situation, the learner began moving towards oncoming traffic. The instructor was able to intervene and prevent the situation from developing further.

Itโ€™s a good reminder that learning to drive is about much more than simply controlling the car. Observation, anticipation, understanding the road layout and being aware of what other road users are doing are all essential skills.

As instructors, weโ€™re there to guide learners through situations like this, explain what happened and help them understand how to recognise and deal with similar situations safely in the future.

Every mistake is an opportunity to learn, and moments like this can be valuable for developing safer driving habits.

Would you have spotted what was happening?

Driving through Page Hall, Sheffield.

Some areas can present more challenges for drivers than others, and Page Hall is a good example of why observation and anticipation are so important.

When driving through a busy built-up area, there can be a lot happening around you at the same time. Pedestrians, parked vehicles, vehicles emerging from side roads, changing traffic conditions and unexpected hazards can all require your attention.

The key is to keep scanning well ahead, check your mirrors regularly, maintain a safe speed and be prepared to react to what you see developing around you.

Watch the video carefully and see what you can spot.

What would you have noticed first?

Whatโ€™s happening behind you?

For this video, weโ€™ve changed the camera angle and filmed from the rear of the vehicle while travelling along the Sheffield Parkway during the evening.

When driving, itโ€™s easy to focus on whatโ€™s directly ahead, but good observation means being aware of what is happening all around you. Regular mirror checks can help you build a picture of what is approaching from behind, what is changing around you and whether any potential hazards are developing.

There can be a lot happening on a busy road like the Sheffield Parkway, especially during the evening when traffic levels and visibility can change.

Take a look at the video and see how many potential hazards you can spot behind the vehicle.

Would you have noticed them while driving?

Would you have spotted the car pulling out?

This is a good example of why observation and anticipation are so important when driving.

As we approach, a car on the left is preparing to pull out into our path. Being aware of what is happening around you and looking for potential hazards gives you more time to recognise what another road user may do.

Good driving involves constantly scanning the road, identifying potential hazards and being prepared to respond safely if the situation changes.

Did you spot the car before it pulled out?

M1 Junction 33 towards the Sheffield Parkway

In this video, weโ€™re travelling south from the M1 Northbound approach towards Junction 33, heading towards the Sheffield Parkway.

This is an important section of road where planning ahead and understanding the lane directions can make a big difference. As you approach Junction 33, pay close attention to the signs, road markings and the lanes available for the direction you need to take.

For learner drivers, this is a great example of why itโ€™s important to look well ahead, identify your route early and position yourself correctly rather than leaving decisions until the last moment.

Remember, good observations, planning and lane discipline are key when dealing with busy junctions.

Would you know which lane you need to use for the Sheffield Parkway?
