🚲 Could the school run become this week's house challenge?

For Cycle to School Week, here's a really simple one for schools to try.

Every time a pupil cycles to school, they earn a point for their house.

You could even turn it into a wider Active Travel Challenge so pupils who walk, scoot or park and stride can join in too.

Then make those journeys visible.

Add a token to the relevant house collector each time a pupil completes the challenge and watch the totals grow throughout the week.

You could make it competitive and see which house completes the most active journeys, set daily targets or get the whole school working together towards one big total.

And while everyone's busy collecting points, there's an opportunity to talk about healthy habits, traffic around school and the environmental impact of how we travel too.

💙 Teachers spend an awful lot of time recognising everybody else's achievements. Today, we're turning the tables.

For World Teachers' Day, imagine you had one reward token to give to a teacher.

Who would get yours – and what would they earn it for?

Maybe it was the teacher who made a subject finally make sense.

The one who made you laugh when you were having a terrible day.

The teacher who spotted something you were good at before you did.

The one whose lessons you still remember years later.

For International Coffee Day, we've been thinking about the classic coffee shop loyalty card.

📚 What if your next reading challenge wasn't about how many books pupils could finish?

With Wigtown Book Festival taking place at the moment, we thought we'd try something a little different.

Turn reading into a whole-school adventure by making different genres your destinations.

🚀 Science fiction
🔎 Mystery
🌍 Non-fiction
🏰 History
😂 Comedy

Instead of racing through as many books as possible, pupils can explore different types of reading and earn recognition for trying something new.

You could award points or tokens for visiting a new genre, writing a review, recommending a book to somebody else, reading aloud or making a trip to the school library.

Classes could even work towards one shared target, watching their collective reading journey grow throughout the term.

💙 Today is National Teaching Assistants' Day, so this one's simply a big THANK YOU.

Thank you to the TAs helping pupils understand something when they need it explained one more time.

The ones spotting when somebody is having a difficult day.

Celebrating the tiny bits of progress that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Finding the missing glue stick.

Helping with the costume.

Sorting out the disagreement.

Remembering approximately 847 things at once. 😂

And somehow knowing exactly which pupil needs a little extra encouragement that day.

So much of what happens in a school wouldn't happen quite as smoothly without you.

To every teaching assistant, learning support assistant and classroom support member in the schools we work with – thank you for everything you do. 💙

⭐ Are the pupils who make the least noise sometimes the easiest to overlook?

In a busy classroom, some achievements naturally stand out.

The pupil who always has their hand up. The fantastic test result. The winning goal. The confident performance in assembly.

But success doesn't always look like that.

Sometimes it's the pupil who finally puts their hand up after weeks of knowing the answer but being too nervous to say it.

The child who reads one more page than they managed last time.

Someone who joins in when they'd normally stay on the sidelines.

The pupil who quietly helps somebody else without expecting anyone to notice.

For them, those moments can be enormous.

That's why a reward system doesn't have to recognise who's best. It can recognise individual progress, effort, courage, kindness, resilience and contribution too.

Because when there are different ways to succeed, there are more opportunities for every pupil to hear:

“I noticed that. Well done.”

🍂 And just like that... autumn is officially here.

Today marks the Autumn Equinox, and we're heading into one of the busiest stretches of the events calendar.

First come the pumpkins, spooky trails and Halloween discos. 🎃

Then it's fireworks, bonfires and November events. 🎆

And before we've quite recovered from those... the Christmas fairs, markets, parties and festive events begin. 🎄

For schools, PTAs, charities, businesses and event organisers, the next few months can involve an awful lot of planning.

Tickets. Food and drink. Games. Fundraising. Rewards. Stalls. Activities. Prizes.

And, occasionally, trying to remember where on earth you put everything after last year's event. 😂

Whatever you've got coming up, here's to a busy, colourful and hopefully very successful autumn event season.
