Our 4th year Civil Engineering undergraduate dissertation students & our lab technician doing fieldwork on a local stream. They are quantifying the mixing in a local stream, to identify how long it takes a pollutant to become fully mixed across the channel. This relates to CSO outfalls and where to monitor downstream water quality. π
One to watch: congratulations to PhD student, Joe, who won the best paper award at the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) conference for his paper on his research topic exploring how aircraft and engine design can reduce the global environmental impact of contrails. π

NASA's Daniel Tani touches down in Sheffield! π
Retired NASA astronaut and Mechanical Engineer, Daniel Tani, visited the University of Sheffield to give a captivating talk to engineering students in the Diamond last December. Hosted by student-led team Daniel shared his inspiring journey, delving into his engineering background and providing a glimpse into his career as a NASA astronaut. π₯°

The Open Access Mechanical Workshop team, led by Richard Hodgkinson, has donated surplus tooling to two local heritage sites: Wortley Top Forge and the Midland Railway - Butterley. These organisations both play a vital role in preserving Sheffieldβs local engineering history.
