INSPIRATIONAL π
Posted with Gary's permission
Back in mid-2021, I received a phone call from Sensei John Johnston Adaptive Karate regarding a man named Gary, who attended one of Johnβs weekly adaptive group classes as part of the MacIntyre charity. John explained that Gary was extremely determined to train regularly and asked if he might be able to come and train with us at Sheffield Karate Club
Gary gave me a call, and I arranged for him to come along and see how he would get on in our mainstream class. I was immediately struck by Garyβs absolute determination, he had a goal, and that goal was to become a black belt π₯
Gary explained that he had previously trained at a Shotokan club for around nine years and had reached green belt level. He wasnβt fazed by the fact that we practise Wado-Ryu kata and subsequently started training with us.
Over the next five years, Gary trained with us mostly three times a week, twice within our mainstream classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and once a week within our inclusive class on Mondays, whilst continuing to train with Sensei John's MacIntyre group on Tuesdays. His dedication and determination to achieve his goal have been truly inspiring.
Gary also gets involved in teaching within the inclusive class and gives our other members something to aspire to...
On Saturday, Gary achieved his black belt...
At his first class back after achieving his goal (whilst wearing his brand new black belt) he pulled me over to let me know he has already started watching our members training videos, in order to start learning his next kata π₯
OUTSTANDING work Gary πͺπ
BIG shout out to all our members who have worked with Gary week in week out. You have all played a part in helped Gary achieve his goal π€π€

The month of May continues to be a big grading month for us π₯
2 new black belts and a 3rd dan were awarded on Saturday π₯
First up was the Samurai group (8-12 years) grading first, followed by our teens/adults class. Excellent commitment and determination. Amongst the belts awarded were 2 new black belts (Gary and Rob) and a 3rd dan (Darren) π₯πͺ
Final gradings take place on the 30th with 2 members going for black belt and 2 going for 3rd dan.
Exciting times for SKC
