Beat cancer ✅
Ring bell ✅
Pass all GCSEs with flying colours 🥳
We’re sending a huge congratulations to Mia who, after ringing the bell to mark the end of her cancer treatment at Sheffield Children’s earlier this year, has officially passed all of her GCSEs this morning!
Mia, a student at Meadowhead School in Sheffield, first came through Sheffield Children’s Emergency Department in March 2025, having discovered a lump in her leg after experiencing consistent weakness. Mia was diagnosed with a bone tumour, and spent extended periods of time on Ward 6, the dedicated haematology and oncology ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, until she rang the bell marking the end of her treatment earlier this year.
Mia said: “I said to myself from the start, there’s no point being negative about it. You have to do the treatment that the team gives you, otherwise you’re not going to get better. They’re an amazing team, very person-centred and direct everything towards me.”
Determined to keep up with her peers, Mia continued studying whilst receiving treatment at Sheffield Children’s with the support of teaching staff from Kingfisher Academy. Teachers from our on-site hospital school work closely with teams at Sheffield Children's to support children and young people with their unique learning needs.
Mia said: “All of my teachers helped me by giving me work so that I could stay caught up. I tried to do exactly what my friends are doing in class. Obviously, treatment and everything caused a bit of brain fog, but everyone was really good about it!”
Following her results, Mia is excited to start college in September!
We’re sending a huge congratulations to Mia, and to all students who are picking up their GCSE results across the UK today!
