We welcomed our friends from Mylnhurst Preparatory School & Nurseryhurst, Nether Green Junior School and Dore Primary Schools to the Westbourne School Poetry Café. Words, art and imagination came together for our National Poetry Day workshop, Talking Pictures.

Pupils brought famous works of art to life through monologues, giving a voice to the people and objects within them. We loved seeing so many pupils have the confidence to perform their poems at our Poetry Performance Café.

A huge well done to everyone who took part, and a special thank you to our brilliant Year 8–11 pupils who helped make the event happen. They performed, taught and coached our younger pupils and were fantastic role models throughout the day.

Year 7 - A Gothic Writing Journey
In English this week, Yr 7 pupils have been paying closer attention to their surroundings, exploring our site for evidence of Gothic architecture. From archways to chimneys, gargoyles to stained glass, pupils uncovered a huge range of Gothic features which they have sketched out and described, ready for use in a piece of creative writing later this half term.

A huge well done to all our Year 10 pupils who took part in a formal speech-making afternoon this week as part of their GCSE English Spoken Language assessment.

The English Department was hugely impressed by how well-prepared our pupils were, with many delivering their speeches confidently and with minimal notes!

We were treated to a fascinating range of topics, including:

🎤 Should celebrities have the right to a private life?
🏎️ Is there gender equality in F1?
👑 Are Disney princesses damaging?
🎸 Are The Beatles the best band ever?

Congratulations to our Year 10 pupils for rising to the challenge. What a brilliant opportunity to develop confidence, communication skills and the ability to present ideas with conviction.
