Composition is an area of music in which I lack confidence but frequently see my pupils thrive in, so it's time I took my own advice here! I need to schedule more composition into my practice time and doodle around on my instruments. Composing will help you get to know your insturment better, aid your music theory and aural skills, and build your confidence. I'll give it a go if you will?

Always the most popular choice for lessons, the piano is a fabulous instrument to learn, but potentially the most challenging of the instruments I teach (until I start offering harp lessons! 😂). I love that the piano continues to attract learners and that so many pupils get to experience the joy of learning to play 🎹

Very limited availability at the moment but the 5 slots in the image are available and there's always room on my waiting list, which has a new and improved system to get the right slots to the right pupils as quickly as possible 🎶

Having a plan before you dive into practising is a really good idea. What are you specifically wanting to work on? Which techniques will be most effective? How long will you spend on certain things? How will you know when you're finished? What will you put in your plan to add some joy and fun to today's practice session? This can take less than 30 seconds to map out at the start but make your session so much more effective - quality over quantity!

My new-and-improved music database and library system is now complete so any of my pupils who ever want to borrow any books are more than welcome to. They're now officially all stamped up. Let me know if you'd like me to recommend something for you!

I love playing duets with my harp teacher. It doesn't happen very often but she's promised me a full lesson of duets once I've recorded my Grade 1 exam (by the end of this month) so I'm very excited! What's your favourite thing that happens in your music lessons?

Slow practice is so important, despite the fact that it can feel a bit tedious and uninspiring! I'm finding with my harp practice in particular that my teacher wants everything to be done very slowly and deliberately. It's not the most fun you'll have in the week, but it might just be the most important work you'll do. Spend a few minutes each session with a metronome, working in slow motion (25%-50% of target speed) and really be mindful of everything you're doing and hearing.

Did you know that I accompany other pupils that aren't my own in their exams, concerts, and contests? It's always lovely to work with new people and meet talented musicians. Get in touch if you have any accompaniment needs!

It's so easy to feel bogged down in the challenge of learning to play an instrument (a really hard thing FYI!) and forget why we started or what our end goals are. Move backwards and forwards along a timeline in your mind to help recapture your 'why'. Why did you first start taking lessons? What is it you hope to achieve or be able to do or play in the future that first inspired you?
