As a working class foster kid, the opportunity to study languages made a big difference to me and many others like me.

So I'm really worried about some of the recent cuts and potential cuts to language courses at universities and falling GCSE and A Level entries in schools.

Why should we care? Because, as I've written to the Guardian, languages are not only the perfect vehicle for bringing young people out of their shells and helping to grow their skills and confidence; they're also strategically vital for the economy and the future of this country.

I'm continuing to work as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Languages with colleagues and other brilliant campaigners who share a love of languages and recognise their importance. On Monday, we closed our doors to Oughtibridge after school Spanish Club after six amazing years. Who knows, we might start there again one day! Bec Ackroyd has done an amazing job for keeping things running after I went on mat leave (and didn’t return!). She also continued learning online during a global pandemic. However, it would have never lasted this long if it wasn’t for the fantastic support and commitment from parents and grandparents who supported and volunteered right from the beginning. A very special mention to Sarah Denton, Sarah Brewis, Matt, Amy Ashford, Nikki Allen and Judith. Good luck to all of our budding linguists especially those that enter the next chapter of their lives at Secondary School 🇪🇸 🇫🇷, you have all been incredible!

We had our first Spanish taster session with pre-schoolers at Elmore Kindergarten - Broomhill. We learned some words and phrases in Spanish from the story, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle. The children were amazing!

PLACES AVAILABLE at our after school Spanish Club 🇪🇸 in Oughtibridge starting September 2022. Our club first started in September 2017. We offer fun Spanish sessions full of language and intercultural learning. We are also a Children’s University learning destination so your child can earn credits as they learn.
