Chinese Heritage Concert success!

The SCI was proud to support the student-led Chinese Heritage Concert, a free performance led by University music masters students, that returned for its third edition after a successful event in March 2024.

Taking place from 5pm on 19 March, this special celebration of Chinese culture featured captivating performances and a rich showcase of heritage.

As a supporting partner, the SCI hosted pre-show stalls exploring tea ceremony, mask painting and calligraphy, providing attendees with an interactive experience before the concert began.

We’d like to congratulate the students on a job well done and we look forward to future iterations of the event!

China Elegant: A celebration of Chinese arts and culture 🎭

This week, we had the pleasure of hosting China Elegant, a special series of cultural masterclasses led by esteemed scholars and artists from Nanjing University. Attendees experienced the craftsmanship of Yixing Zisha pottery (Feb 25), the artistry of Kunqu Opera (Feb 26), and the beauty of Chinese calligraphy (Feb 27). Each session featured live demonstrations, expert insights, and hands-on participation, bringing these cherished traditions to life across three different university locations.

With limited spaces, the sessions filled quickly, and the participation of students, staff and SCI friends made the event a resounding success. Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating the elegance and depth of Chinese culture!

We were proud to support a group of 6 UK students who competed at the World Educational Robotics Championships in Shanghai, a trip organized by Dr Melissa Butt, founder of Discovery STEM Education. Our very own teacher, Professor Wang Yong, provided complementary lessons in Mandarin Chinese learning for the students to aid them along their way in China.
