Booking your car driving test

From later in spring 2026, you will need to book your car driving test yourself on GOV.UK. Your driving instructor will not be able to book it for you.

You should:

only book at a test centre you intend to use - you will only be able to move your test to nearby centres
only book when your driving instructor says you’re ready - speak to your driving instructor first
use your driving instructor’s reference number when you book - this will make sure your instructor does not get double-booked
choose a date you realistically expect to be ready by - you will only be allowed to make 2 changes to your appointment

You may be scraping the frost your car where you are, but safety goes far beyond defrosting. If you're travelling make sure you:

✅Check your route for any disruption via https://nationalhighways.co.uk/travel-updates/travel-alerts/

✅Prepare your vehicle: Check your lights are working and that your tyre pressures are set correctly (pressure will drop in cooler temperatures). Make sure your windows are free from ice/debris so that you have proper visibility.

✅Drive safely: Slow down, increase stopping distances, and be alert to your surroundings. If conditions are bad where you are, consider if you need to travel.

✅Stay informed: Monitor weather forecasts and adjust your travel plans accordingly. Be aware of potential hazards like ice patches on roads. ℹ️

Half a million tickets were given out for speeding in 20mph limit zones last year across Britain

It's 20mph on over half of London's roads, most built-up areas in Wales and loads of towns and cities across the country...

Reduced speeds can mean a reduction in serious accidents, injuries and insurance claims

Nicky Campbell asks: why can’t we stick to 20mph?

It’s Road Safety Week 2025!

Planning a longer journey? Use this checklist before you set off:

✅ Get sufficient sleep before embarking on a long journey – do not begin a journey if you are tired
✅ Take regular breaks – take a 15-minute break every 2 hours or sooner if tired
✅ Check fuel level – fill up ahead of a long journey
✅ Check tyre pressure and condition
✅ Test lights, indicators and wipers

Small checks make a big difference to your safety. What's on your pre-journey checklist this ?
