Received Pronunciation or RP
The famous British 'accent'! 🇬🇧
Actually there are lots of different British accents but Received Pronunciation or RP is maybe the most famous accent.
Received Pronunciation (RP) explained – where it comes from, and how traditional RP differs from modern RP 🇬🇧
Traditional RP is associated with power, wealth and privilege - think the Royal Family, Prime Minsters and in general people with rich families. At one time, it was the only accent that people who worked for BBC radio or TV were allowed to have!
The key to the RP accent is accuracy, the sounds in this accent are very clear and emphasized.
Like many British accents both modern and traditional RP are non rhotic, meaning there is usually no strong R sound.
In traditional RP the y sound in tube and Tuesday is clearly pronounced, but in most other British accents (including Modern RP) it would be pronounced like 'choob' and 'chewsday'!
Also in traditional RP there are no glottal Ts (the uh sound where a T sound is) but there are some in modern RP.
Whether you’re aiming for a classic BBC sound and wanting to sound like the Queen, or you just want to understand the accents you hear in the UK today, this will help.
