Next month I’m going to be running a landscape painting workshop in the Peak District with Chris Clements from the Northern Realist art school in Manchester.

It will take place on the 23rd of August at Tegg’s Nose Country Park. It’s suitable for all levels and we will be providing materials. Introduction to Glazing in Oils 29/09/2021

My next online workshop 'Introduction to Glazing in Oils' starts this Sunday so you only have a few days left to sign up.

I'll be teaching you all about the fundamental principles of glazing in oils. With a particular emphasis on how you can use glazing techniques to create really vivid colours in your work.

Introduction to Glazing in Oils We will be painting a bright blue glass vase (and flowers) over the course of three consecutive Sundays. The painting will be able to dry completely each week, ensuring that the subsequent glaze layers will work correctly.

Here's the second part of this painting demo. I'm working over the dried wash drawing (with an extra raw umber wash on top). I begin by laying in the shadow colours before adding the lightest tone and then establishing a simple set of halftones in between.

Here's the first stage from my last portrait painting workshop. We started with a simple wash drawing in burnt umber. Using just one pigment allows you to focus on the structure and shadows without worrying about colour mixing. We left this to dry before applying a thin raw umber wash to tone the whole piece in preparation for the second stage.

Great to be working with students in person again. This is the early stages of a colour cast painting by . Dave has worked really hard with online lessons over the past year and his skills have been developing really quickly so it's nice to be able to work on such an important project in the studio.

Here's a final shot of my demonstration from the online portrait painting course I've been running the past three Sundays. Thanks to everyone who took part - I've been extremely pleased with all the work produced by all the attendees. I'll hopefully be able to share some of it soon 😁

Here are the final few stages of this drawing. Lots of gradual refinement using hard charcoal and a kneadable eraser.

The next stage of this drawing involves laying in major tones before I begin to develop the larger forms of the portrait.
