Sheffield Oral Health Promotion Team have been running supervised toothbrushing clubs in Sheffield schools and nurseries since 2014.
Aimed at children aged 2 to 7, over the years the settings have extended and we now have over 10000 children brushing!
With over 1/4 of Sheffield children suffering with decayed teeth, toothbrushing in early years settings helps prevent the disease as well as building motor skills.
If you would like your child's setting to be involved in the supervised toothbrushing programme, please pass this on the contact information.

Are age specific toothpastes a gimmick? Let clear up the confusion!
All children aged 0-3, from their first tooth are advised to us a toothpaste containing at least 1000ppm sodium fluoride. Due to high levels of decay in Sheffield, we advise using a generic family toothpaste containing around 1450ppm - following Deliver Better Oral Health guidance
0-3 a smear of paste around the size of a grain of rice
3+ a pea size amount
There is no need to buy separate toothpastes for children of different ages
Chapter 9: fluoride

With one of the driest summers on record and the warmer weather set to make a return, Sheffield is low on water reserves.
One thing that could make a huge impact is dry brushing.
We advocate a dry brushing technique so the fluoride in our toothpaste is not diluted.
No need to wet the brush before hand, our saliva will help foam the toothpaste, and never rinse after brushing, this washes the protective fluoride away!
Help save our water reserves this summer

Gum disease is caused by a build up of bacteria in plaque irritating the gums, it is important to brush all the tooth surface and gum line twice daily. You can remove plaque easily with a toothbrush whilst it is still soft, if plaque is missed when brushing it can set to the teeth making removal more difficult and the gums more irritated and even bleed
