Have you been trying to make time for creativity and finding it gets pushed out by everything else you have to do?

Art Club is a chance to book time for yourself to be creative. Two hours each month with a lovely group of people, a little direction and some homemade cake!

Spring term bookings are now open.

There are sessions at Dungworth on the first Wednesday and fourth Thursday of the month and new from January I'll be starting monthly session in Hillsborough on the second Monday of each month. All sessions are 7-9pm and everything is provided including tea and homemade cake!

You don't need to consider yourself “arty” and you certainly don't need to produce a masterpiece.

I've always loved making art and being creative but for a long time in my life I found I was too busy and I couldn't find time to fit it in.
More recently I've found ways to make time for regular creative practice through starting art clubs and making it a higher priority in my life and I've been thinking about how this has helped me in so many ways.

When I draw and make art regularly I start seeing the world in a different way. I notice things that I wouldn't have noticed like the way that the light changes colour or the shape between tree branches. That has led to me having a greater appreciation of the world around me which I think makes me feel just a bit more content.

I also find if I'm making more often, I get less worried about making things I don't like. I've come to accept that to make 'good art' (or at least things that I am happy with), I have to accept that I will also make a lot of 'bad art' (or things that I frankly hate!) And that's OK. It can't all be good and actually quite often the things I hate lead me on to making something that I love later on.

Regular creative practice makes me more experimental too. i try things that I wouldn't have tried. Often I have to do this to force myself to do it. It doesn't always come easily. In fact it often doesn't. I have to trick myself into getting creative by trying out something, being playful and before I know it I've spent 3 hours making without realising it!

And whilst it can be hard to make time or find time, I'll be honest that I can find time to mindlessly scroll still so it's about making use of those pockets of time. Sometimes just 5 minutes of drawing is all I manage in a day but even that helps along the way.

This is one of the reasons I love running Art Club. It's not really about producing a series of finished artworks. It's about giving yourself permission to practise regularly and get into a creative habit.

I've been quietly working behind the scenes on a new home for Jenny Coats Create-ED, and I'm really pleased to finally be able to share it with you.

I've got two very different creative opportunities coming up in October, both inspired by the natural world.

🌿 Nature Journalling
Tuesday 13 October - Sheffield Botanical Gardens

A morning spent outdoors slowing down, looking closely and recording what catches your eye through drawing, watercolour and words.

🍂 Printing in the Woods
Saturday 17 October - Ecclesall Woods Discovery Centre

A day combining time in the woodland with hands-on printmaking, using the shapes, textures and patterns around us as inspiration.

Both are relaxed, welcoming workshops and no previous experience is needed.

They're a chance to step away from the usual 'busyness' for a few hours, spend some time outside and make something with your own hands.

If you've been thinking about trying one of my workshops, now is a good time to book — there are still places available, but they're beginning to fill.
