When autumn flows increase, getting the fly into the feeding zone becomes increasingly important.

Tungsten nymphs let you fish small, natural-looking patterns while still reaching deeper runs efficiently.

For grayling, we particularly like compact Hare’s Ear, shrimp and slim nymph patterns, adjusting bead weight rather than automatically reaching for a bigger fly.

A few carefully chosen tungsten flies can cover an enormous amount of river fishing.

Upstream spider fishing is a wonderfully simple way to target autumn grayling.

Cast upstream, keep in touch as the flies drift back towards you and watch the leader carefully. Takes can be surprisingly subtle, but sometimes the line simply stops or darts away.

Traditional spiders still earn their place on modern rivers.

Snipe & Purple is one of those beautifully simple traditional patterns that continues to catch fish.

Sparse, mobile and particularly useful for grayling, it can be fished as part of a team of spiders or worked upstream through likely runs and glides.

A classic pattern that still deserves space in the fly box.
