Accurate time recording isn't just an administrative requirement, it is a core pillar of client trust and professional standards.

Our latest Ethics Essentials training scenario follows solicitors Fred and Amy, as an offhand chat in the canteen reveals just how far Amy has taken the over-recording of time. What are Fred’s regulatory duties once he knows what Amy has been doing?

The Legal Ombudsman has given a strong indication that it will publish case decisions in full, but not until next year at the earliest.

The complaints handler consulted earlier this year on changes to its publication policy as it currently only publishes full details of cases where there are public interest issues or opportunities to learn from law firms' mistakes.

Complaints-handler says current practice of publishing decision data alone is not transparent.

Reports to the Solicitors Regulation Authority about solicitors' competence rose by 48% to over 4,000 last year.

The SRA's annual assessment of continuing competence said some solicitors "continue to face challenges documenting their reflection and carrying out narrow learning and development".

Academics have warned that the SRA plans for solicitors to attend compulsory 3 hour ethics discussions "could lead to a 'box-ticking' approach", rather than it being an activity which is capable of adding value across the organisation.

Compulsory ethics discussions are one of the three main elements in the SRA’s plans for a beefed-up continuing competence regime, published in April.

Solicitors Regulation Authority plans for solicitors to attend compulsory three-hour ethics discussions “could lead to a ‘box-ticking’ approach”, academics have warned.

Data protection failures aren't rare, and they aren't confined to firms with weak systems.

They happen because good people, under pressure, make mistakes.

Training built around how breaches actually happen in a law firm and what to do about them, rather than generic compliance content, is what can make the difference.

We've developed practical data protection e-learning courses designed specifically for law firms.

The SRA published a new warning notice this week on the use of AI in legal practice.

Two concerns are highlighted: AI generated hallucinations making their way into court submissions, and confidential client information being entered into AI tools without adequate safeguards.

Both have already surfaced in recent case law that has been widely reported and commented on, including the Upper Tribunal's comments in UK v Secretary of State for the Home Department [2026] UKUT 81 (IAC), on the risks public AI tools pose to legal professional privilege.

AI does not change the professional standards solicitors are held to.
