The annual Summer Reading Challenge starts this Saturday 4 July 2026!
Delivered by The Reading Agency, in partnership with libraries and supported by Universal Music Group UK, this year’s theme is “Read to the Beat”.
Aimed at keeping primary school children’s reading skills sharp over the summer, the challenge is to read six books or more before 12th September when it ends.
The Summer Reading Challenge also provides much-needed entertainment – there are six stickers to collect and, once the challenge is completed, children receive a medal and certificate.
Derbyshire libraries are hosting a variety of activities over the holidays linked to the reading challenge which can be found on the ‘What’s On’ section of the libraries’ website https://ow.ly/cZ9t50ZiyIi.

Some useful information for parents.

Screens are now part of everyday family life, but for very young children, clear and predictable boundaries can help screen time feel calm rather than constant.

Our latest guide shares practical advice for families, nurseries and early years settings on supporting healthier digital habits for under-fives.

The guide covers:
• Choosing age-appropriate content
• Protecting bedtime routines
• Keeping devices in shared spaces
• Co-viewing and talking about what children see
• Using simple scripts and transition warnings
• Modelling balanced device use as adults

With supportive tips and realistic routines, this guide helps adults manage screen time with greater confidence.
