Rachel is looking forward to another visit to Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind’s Little Sparklers playgroup tomorrow morning!

Little Sparklers is a group for pre-school children with a visual impairment (and their siblings) which takes place every Wednesday 10am to 12noon at their Mappin Street Centre during term time, and we love bringing Rhythm Time along to the group!

Want to practise your Solfège hand signs at home with your pre-schooler?

In class, we use these hand signs which represent the notes do, mi and sol
🎶That’s notes 1, 3 and 5 of the musical sca
le! Using the hand signs while singing creates muscle memory. Then when you learn a new song,
making the sign helps your brain to find the correct notes. Very clever!

Sol – hold your hand flat with your palm facing you, at chest height

Mi – turn your hand so the palm faces downwards, and move lower

Do – make a fist with your palm facing downwards, at waist height

Try singing “please sit down” (sol mi do) or “please stand up” (do mi sol) with your little Rhythm Timer.

Then take the words away and just sing the tune with the hand signs - can they figure out what to do from
the melody and/or the hand signs alone? If so, they have started to learn about the ups and downs of
musical pitch! 🤩
