Need a quick mental game tip for your next round? šā³ļø
If youāre the type of golfer who instantly focuses on everything that went wrong after a shot⦠this oneās for you š§
Try using sarcasm to interrupt the negativity.
Instead of:
āBrilliant⦠another terrible shot šā
Try:
āLovely. Absolute masterpiece šā¦ at least I committed to it.ā
Or:
āWell that was special šā¦ I can still get up and down from there.ā
Sounds silly? Maybe.
Effective? Often.
Why? Because for a lot of golfers, forcing āpositive thinkingā feels fake. Sarcasm can be a much easier bridge between beating yourself up and actually finding something useful. (Speaking from experience šš)
Youāre not pretending the shot was great⦠youāre just giving your brain something more helpful to work with before the next one.
Polish the š©ā¦ then move on š

Can you tell if this was a good shot or a poor shot?
Most golfers react to a shot before theyāve even processed what just happened š
Bad shot?ā¦
Head drop.
Club slam.
Negative self-talk š¤
Good shot?
Overexcitement
Expectation rises with adrenaline
Pressure builds. š
In order for you to play at your best thereās something you need to masterā¦
The pause š§
That moment between the event and the reaction is where your power is šŖ
In this video, you canāt tell if the shot was good or bad⦠and thatās the point.
Your body language, emotional control, and ability to respond calmly after a shot can massively influence what happens next ā³ļø
The way you respond after a shot can either create more calm and composure⦠or more chaos.
The good news is that this isnāt something you either āhaveā or you donāt. Itās a skill šš»āāļø
⦠and like any skill, it can be trained with reps.
The more you practise responding instead of reacting, the more emotionally stable, committed, and free youāll become on the course š„š§ ā³ļø

How often are you walking onto the golf course trying to prove something.
Prove youāre good enough.
Prove you belong.
Prove youāre the player you think you should be.
Prove what other people think about you is (or isnāt) true.
That pressure becomes heavy, especially after a mistake or setback.
When every shot feels tied to your identity, golf stops feeling free.
Ironically, many golfers start performing better when they stop using golf as a way to validate themselves.
Less forcing.
Less fear.
More trust.
More freedom.
You are allowed to enjoy golf without needing your scorecard to confirm your worth⦠for anyone who needs to hear that š§ ā³š«¶

This stuff isnāt about your golf swing and it can be a real card wrecker š«£ā³ļø
But if you can resonate with all of these things⦠you have so much unlocked potential my friend š¤©š§ š
Gratitude is a powerful tool to keep in the bag. Here are a few ways you could call on itā¦
š Gratitude statement: āIām grateful forā¦ā
š Shifting perspective: āWhat could be way worse than this?ā
Sometimes itās not about pretending everything is fine⦠itās about reminding yourself that it probably isnāt as bad as your mind is making it out to be š¤·āāļø
Gratitude doesnāt ignore frustration, it can just stop it from taking over.
You donāt necessarily need a better situation to feel better⦠you just need a better perspective to work with what youāve got⦠then you give yourself a better chance of bouncing back š§ ā³ļø
š«¶
If youāre standing over the ball and currently very focused on mechanics (shoulder turn, club path, body movement etc), Iād question whether youāre trying to control a golf swing rather than playing a golf shot šļø
The problem with that is that thereās just too much going on! š¤Æ
Youāre asking your brain to control a load of different movements in a 2 second window⦠while also trying to aim at a target youāve probably forgotten about š«£
It doesnāt work like that.
Sometimes you might pull the shot off⦠but itās incredibly hard to repeat⦠so thatās where inconsistency creeps inā¦. and thenā¦
You try even harder to control the mechanics of your golf swing š±ā¦ (then repeat!) š
Wonder why you start hitting good shots again when you stop caring because your roundās already lost? š¤
Great golf is played by reacting to a target⦠just like most other sports š¤·āāļø. The trick is to learn that skill š
Next time you play, try this:
Pick your target.
See the shot.
Then let it happen.
I dare you! šš§ ā³ļø
Just a little reminder for those that need to hear this šā³ļøš§
You canāt control other peoples opinions in golf or life⦠and if youāre spending all your time trying to, youāll know itās exhausting! š«

Most people are crystal clear on what they donāt want⦠in golf and life š§ ā³ļø
āI donāt want to hit it in the water.ā
āI donāt want to mess this up.ā
āI donāt want to look stupid.ā
But your brain works a bit like a spotlight.
So whatever you focus on, you move towards.
What would change if you got just as clear on what you DO want?
āStart it at the bunker and trust the fade.ā
āCommit to the shot.ā
āStay present, give it my best and crack a few smiles.ā
Same moment but a different direction with your thoughts - emotions - actions - results š¤Æ
Next time you feel the pressure, ask yourself:
š āWhat do I want here?ā
Then go all in on that šŖ

Most golfers donāt have a mental game problemā¦
They have an application problem.
Youāve heard it all before:
āStay in the presentā
āDonāt think negativelyā
āEmbrace the nervesā
But no one actually shows you how to do that when it matters.
So you try⦠it doesnāt work⦠and maybe you assume itās you.
Itās not.
The advice isnāt wrong⦠itās just incomplete.
The shift will happen when you learn how to apply it to your thoughts, your patterns, and your pressure moments.
Thatās where a mental game coach comes in š§ ā³ļø
āJust be more positiveā doesnāt wash with a lot of golfers I work with š§ ā³ļø
Hopefully this gives a bit more meaning to how helpful or unhelpful self talk can impact your ability to put a good score in š
