Our first Y4/Y5 core english session was a blast. We explored modal verbs, we used a conscience alley to explore a dilemma, we studied a story opening and we learnt the meaning of new words.

A long term 1-1 student (Y3) was struggling with developing sentence structure and ideas. After assessment, I decided to work on oracy, language and explore a good quality text. I created an instruction map and together we created actions to help us remember the words. It is so important to include oracy into our planning.
The National Curriculum writing objectives specify that pupils should compose and rehearse sentences orally before committing them to paper. If pupils cannot construct sentences that use grammatical elements they have been working on, for example, conjunctions, fronted adverbials, dialogue, how will they be able to use these in their writing? Basically, if they can't say their ideas how will they be able to write their ideas.

Throughout my teaching career, I have had the opportunity to train our future generation of teachers. This is a great honour for me. I have been nominated four times consecutively for mentor of the year (Sheffield Hallam) and each time it surprises me. This review is from a teacher I trained.
