Our September walking champions have been spotted receiving their well-deserved badges! 🏅 We’ve already seen some eager adventurers proudly wearing their shiny rewards around school. 🌟

🏆 And we have some amazing news to share!

In September, Birley Primary Academy ranked 214th out of 1,104 schools nationwide and an incredible 14th out of 36 local schools! 👏🌍

A huge WELL DONE to everyone who has been helping us to increase our active travel and get more steps in on the journey to and from school. Every journey counts! 👣💙

🎉 A special congratulations to 2KW! 🎉

2KW came FIRST across the whole academy for their dedication to active travel and will be looking after our Walking to School mascot throughout October! 🏆🧸

If you didn’t receive a badge this month, don’t worry! There’s always next month! 😊

Why not talk as a family about how you could get a few extra steps in before school? You could:

👣 Walk a little further

What an incredible week we have had celebrating Recycle Week 2026 at Birley! 💚

Our Global Gang members have been working incredibly hard to help make a difference around our academy. They took to our school grounds to tidy up litter and, importantly, worked together to sort what they collected into recyclable and non-recyclable items, ensuring everything was disposed of appropriately. 🌱👏

But that wasn't all! Our Global Gang then launched an academy-wide Creative Recycling Competition, challenging children to get creative and think about how we can reuse, recycle and reduce waste. ♻️🎨

And WOW... what a response! 🤩

We received some absolutely outstanding entries from every year group across the academy. The creativity, imagination and effort that went into the entries was fantastic, as you can clearly see from the amazing quality on display in the photograph below! 🌎✨

🏆 Prizes and certificates were awarded to all of our brilliant entries, with our two Grand Prize Winners, Oliver in Y4 and Willow in Y5, earning themselves a fantastic Cineworld voucher! 🎬🍿

A huge THANK YOU to all of our parents and carers for supporting your children and encouraging them to get involved. Your support is greatly appreciated. ❤️

Today, we have been celebrating National Poetry Day across the academy, and what a wonderful day it has been! 💙

Our focus in English lessons today has been solely on poetry, with all of our learning inspired by this year’s theme of ‘Wonder’. 🌟

Throughout the academy, our children have been exploring the magic of words, playing with language and discovering how poetry can help us see the world in new and wonderful ways. ✍️💭

As part of the day, our Year 4 children explored the whole academy for their very own ‘Wonder Walk’ around our school grounds. They explored the places around Birley where they could find wonder, thinking carefully about the sights, sounds, feelings and memories connected to special places in our school. 🏫🌳

After their walk, the children used their ideas and observations to create their own poems about a place in school that is special to them. ❤️

It has been fantastic to see the children embracing poetry and finding wonder in the everyday. 🌈✨

This week, we joined Clare Bristow, from the Sadie Bristow Foundation, for a special 30-minute live assembly exploring allergies and how we can help everyone feel safe and included at school. Clare explained what an allergy is, introduced the new allergy-safety requirements known as Benedict’s Law and shared simple actions children can take, including listening to others and telling an adult if someone feels unwell. This important assembly allowed all pupils to understand why allergy awareness matters and how the whole school community can work together to care for and include children with allergies.

Yesterday, our School Council had the exciting opportunity to meet with Luke Goddard, a Birley Councillor. During the visit, the children shared their thoughts about what it is like to live in Birley, discussing what they enjoy about the local area as well as the changes they would like to see in the future.

Our pupils provided Luke with some thoughtful and insightful perspectives, demonstrating how much they care about their community. In return, Luke invited the children to ask him questions and was incredibly impressed by the range of interesting, reflective and well-considered questions they posed.

We were once again immensely proud of this wonderful group of young people, who represented the academy impeccably. They spoke with confidence, respect and maturity, and were excellent ambassadors for our school.

☕ Hot Chocolate Learning Celebration! 🍫

Last Friday afternoon, we also had the pleasure of welcoming a special group of children for Hot Chocolate with The Headteacher, celebrating those who had impressed their teachers with an aspect of their learning throughout the week.

The children enjoyed delicious hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and marshmallows, whilst chatting about their amazing learning and celebrating their achievements. 🤩

It was a lovely opportunity to recognise their efforts and share in their success.

Well done to all of our Sparkle and Shine winners and hot chocolate recipients! You have all shown what it means to embrace learning, challenge yourselves and demonstrate The Birley Way. 💙🧡

Today, our academy proudly celebrated European Day of Languages, and what an incredible day it was! Throughout the academy, children explored different languages and cultures, helping to promote understanding, inclusion and respect for others. As part of the celebrations, all children learned how to say "thank you" in a variety of European languages, encouraging them to recognise the importance of communication and kindness when visiting different countries across Europe.

The children also enjoyed a specially themed European lunch menu, which was a huge success and gave everyone the opportunity to experience tastes inspired by different cultures.

Our Y5 and Y6 pupils took part in an exciting live languages lesson led by a teacher from The Birley Academy. They joined pupils from other LEAD schools across Sheffield and Worksop, making it a fantastic collaborative experience and a wonderful opportunity to learn alongside others.

A huge well done to all of our children for embracing the day with such enthusiasm and curiosity. It was a fantastic celebration of languages, cultures and diversity, and a reminder of how language can help bring people together. 🌍✨
