After smashing her qualifier comp, Gail was straight back at it three weeks later. We always knew it was going to be difficult with such a quick turnaround, not helped by a nerve impingement flaring up in her hip. However, with this potentially being a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete at the Arnold’s, we decided to go for it.
Bench
Opened with 32.5kg ⚪️⚪️🔴
After feeling much more nervous than at her last comp, this opener moved extremely well, with just one red light for a slight bum lift on one side.
Second: 37.5kg ⚪️🔴🔴
After getting the press command, Gail rolled the bar back onto her chest, leading to downward movement. Combined with a small bum lift on one side, it was a no lift — but the press itself looked very quick.
Third: 42.5kg 🔴🔴🔴
With how the last press moved, and with second place already locked in, we decided to take a shot at a PB. It came off the chest with speed, but Gail ended up pressing back into the rack.
There’s definitely more to come from the bench. Some minor things happened, but in only her second comp — at such a big event and on completely new equipment — these are all valuable lessons. Now we know exactly what to work on to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Deadlifts
Opener: 90kg ⚪️⚪️⚪️
Moved exactly as we wanted, and with the venue feeling a little less overwhelming, Gail looked locked in.
Second: 100kg ⚪️⚪️⚪️
Moved so quickly that Gail came up onto her toes, but thankfully this didn’t lead to any downward movement, so it was a good lift. However, it did affect the nerve in her hip, causing some discomfort.
Third: 110kg 🔴🔴🔴
We went for a PB again. It came off the ground well, but Gail felt the nerve and wisely decided not to push it. I’m sure once she’s back at 100%, this won’t be an issue..
I can’t say how proud I am of Gail. She really pushed herself out of her comfort zone to do this comp — not only with the quick turnaround, but competing at such a big event. She handled herself amazingly, and to come away with two national medals and qualify for Worlds in your second comp — you can’t ask for more

Comp Review Time
Single lifts is always my favourite comp of the year, and this year I was even more excited with it being at the
Training going into this comp had gone really well, finishing with a 3kg PB and a 193kg bench, and I was ready to go for more.
Opened with 180kg ⚪️⚪️⚪️ — first time opening on 180kg, and it felt very comfortable. After it took 3 years of blood, sweat, and tears to hit 180kg, it feels amazing to be opening on it just a year and a half after I first achieved it.
Second attempt 190kg ⚪️⚪️⚪️ — took 190kg for my second to match my comp PB (and actually take a 7.5kg single lifts PB). Apparently, I need to do all my best benches in a full power comp! It felt very, very comfortable and definitely feels like a weight that has been truly conquered less than a year after the first time I hit it.
Third attempt 200kg 🔴🔴🔴 — the 190kg felt so good that 200kg felt possible, and there was nothing to lose. It shot off my chest but stalled out. I’m not disappointed; if anything, the way it felt has made me even more excited to get back to training, as I know 200kg is close and I know what I need to do to hit it.
Finished 4th in my class in the most stacked class I’ve ever competed in. I believe a 190kg would have seen me in second in every other year I’ve competed at single lifts—definitely would have been in the top 3. Out of the 9 people in the class, 5 attempted 200kg, with the winner hitting 500 pounds. This is even more inspiration to get back in the gym and get that 200kg nailed for Full Power Brits in July.
As always, a massive thank you to the for putting on a show that felt truly special!

When Rosie started coming to the Learn to Lift classes at the Hallamshire, her upper body strength was poor, and she was dealing with a long-lasting shoulder injury. This was preventing her from doing day to day tasks such as putting up her washing line.
However, thanks to the work she’s put in during these classes with our instructors, along with her own determination, putting up her washing line is no longer a problem!
Rosie has worked incredibly hard to achieve this goal, and we are all super proud of her.
But it’s not just her upper body strength she’s been working on Rosie has also developed a love for squatting and deadlifting. Pop down to the gym to see her PBs on the PB board I’m sure you’ll be just as impressed as we are.
If you see Rosie around the club, make sure to congratulate her. And if you have a good news story from your time in our gym and you’re happy for us to post about it, please let one of the gym staff know.
