My inner critic's called Judy! Judy pops up every now and again, but I recognise I don't connect with her in the same way as I used to. Giving her a name has definitely been part of what helped.

Naming your inner critic creates distance between you and that unkind voice that constantly doubts, judges, catastrophises, and keeps you playing small.

When you give it a name it creates detachment. And the wonderful benefit of detachment is, it allows for a different, more aware view point.

It helps you to know - this is a voice I experience, not the truth of who I am.

And once you have detachment and objective observation, you can start to challenge your inner critic. You don’t have to silence it completely (that's not fully possible). You just stop handing it the microphone, so it can become quieter and less powerful.

When Judy pops up I acknowledge her, often tell her she’s talking rubbish, and then ask Emma (me!) to replace the not very helpful thing Judy just said with something more inspiring....
I basically say something nice to myself!

Are we really aware of what we say to ourselves internally? Most of the time, we’re not.

For some, that critical voice seems easy to ignore. You brush past it, stay busy, pretend it’s not there - but it is.

For others, it’s louder, constant, convincing - it sounds like truth:
“This is just who I am.”
“I shouldn’t want too much.”
“I don’t deserve more than this.”

And when you hear something often enough, you start to believe it. Not just as a thought but as your identity. And from that place, your life begins to shape itself around it.
You hold back.
You people-please.
You make yourself smaller so you’re not “too much.”
You question whether you’re allowed to want more.

Not because it’s true, but because it feels true.

I want you to know, that voice isn’t who you are. It’s something you’ve learned - and anything learned can be unlearned. It all starts with awareness, not judgment, not forcing it away - just noticing.
“What am I actually telling myself right now?”

Because when you begin to hear it clearly, you can start to choose something different.

Your inner critic doesn’t get quieter on its own - It gets quieter when you learn how to challenge it.

That’s where mindset coaching comes in.

Because most people don’t even realise they’re not listening to the truth, they’re listening to a pattern.
A pattern of self-doubt and fear - A pattern that’s been repeated for years.

Mindset coaching helps you:
Identify where that voice actually comes from
Separate facts from fear-based thoughts
Rewire the way you speak to yourself
Build a mindset that supports you instead of holding you back

It’s not about thinking positive all the time. It's about thinking more supportively.

And when your inner voice changes, it shifts everything - Your decisions change and your confidence grows.

You don’t have to keep believing every negative thought you have.

That voice in your head - the one that says:

“You’re not good enough.”
“You’re going to mess this up.”
“Who do you think you are?”

I'm sure you already know... that’s your inner critic.
And it’s loud, but it’s not always right.

It learned its job a long time ago - to protect you from failure, rejection, embarrassment.
So it speaks up when you’re about to take a step, to take action, to grow.

But it's good to understand:

Your inner critic isn’t the enemy, but unchecked it’s in charge.
You don’t silence it by fighting it, you outgrow it by questioning it.
Not every thought deserves your belief.

Next time it shows up, pause and ask:

“Is this fact?"
"Is it true?"
… "or fear?”

Then choose a better voice.

One that says:
“I can figure this out.”
“I’m allowed to try.”
“I don’t need to be perfect to begin.”

Overthinking is fear… in disguise.

It looks like:

“I just need more time to figure it out.”
“What if I make the wrong decision?”
“Let me think this through one more time…”

But what’s really underneath?

Fear of failure.
Fear of judgment.
Fear of getting it wrong.

So instead of moving, you stay stuck in loops - analysing, questioning, doubting.

The thing is, that clarity doesn’t come from thinking more.
It comes from doing (doing something different - however small the step).

You don’t need another scenario, you want a step forward.
Because every time you act, you replace fear with evidence.

So next time you catch yourself overthinking, ask:
Am I actually solving this… or avoiding it?

Then do the smallest brave thing you can.
That’s how you break the cycle.

You’re stuck because for your subconscious mind staying the same feels safer than changing.

And seeing as your nervous system responds to what’s held in your subconscious, change often doesn't feel physically safe either.

Your subconscious is in charge of 95% of your thoughts, and your conscious just 5%.
The main job of your subconscious is to keep you safe, and as it rules the show, it's not just about deciding consciously that you want something different.

That's why it's good to understand your mind isn’t trying to sabotage you - it’s trying to protect you.
Familiar patterns, even the ones that frustrate you, feel predictable. And predictable feels safe to your subconscious.

Change?
That’s uncertainty, risk, discomfort - everything your subconscious is designed to protect you from.
So you hesitate, you overthink, you wait.

Because your subconscious is currently in control and it's choosing safety over growth.

It helps to know:
Growth will never feel completely safe at the start.
What helps you feel safe enough to begin is understanding your mind.
An understanding that comes from mindset coaching.
A coaching process that helps you question - 'if you're actually stuck?… or subconsciously choosing what feels familiar?'
And then supports you in what to do next...
