Small rural preschool in beautiful surroundings with Forest School/Musical Bumps/outdoor play & more

Last Friday we celebrated Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday by becoming nature explorers 🌿🌎

After talking together about Sir David and his love of animals, plants and our natural world, the children planted potatoes before heading off on a village walk and scavenger hunt.

We listened for birds, spotted plants and insects, and noticed the world around us before finishing our adventure at beautiful St Peter’s Church.

A lovely day of curiosity, exploration and connection with our environment ❤️

What an incredible hands-on experience for the children this week… 🐾

We loved our visit from Naomi at Animalia!

We learnt a new word — amphibian — when we met Jabba the frog 🐸 He needs water and has sticky feet to climb trees and catch insects and small lizards.

Next was Marmite the 3-year-old royal python 🐍 followed by Mushu the bearded dragon 🦎 who can puff himself up and show off his spiky beard! He eats insects and vegetables.

We then met rabbits Storm and Onyx 🐰 and learnt how to gently brush them. We talked about how their whiskers help them sense space.

Our guinea pigs were Rolo (a “skinny pig”) and Peanut (super fluffy!) 🐹 who love carrots and dried peas.

Finally, we met Tuppence the tortoise 🐢
She is 3 years old and was once the size of a £2 coin! We learnt how to hold her carefully, that she has a beak (no teeth), and that she eats rose petals and dandelions. She can live up to 50–60 years!

The children were calm, curious and so gentle throughout 💛
And of course… we all washed our hands at the end! 🧼

Today the children were talking about St George’s Day and became curious about the England flag 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

We explored how the flag is made and some children chose to create their own using red paper strips. They carefully cut the paper and used glue to place the strips in a cross shape, developing their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and early creativity along the way.

We also talked about how St George’s Day is a special day celebrated in England and shared a simple story about bravery, helping others and traditions.

At preschool, we love following children’s interests and turning everyday conversations into meaningful learning opportunities ✨

🌍 Small hands, big impact. 💚

This week at SKIPS, our children explored World Earth Day through meaningful, hands-on experiences inspired by the Curiosity Approach.

They investigated how pollution impacts our oceans 🌊
Explored recycling and reusing materials ♻️
Created habitats for wildlife 🐞
And immersed themselves in nature through our forest school provision 🌿

Through authentic play experiences, children are developing empathy, responsibility and respect for the world around them while building a meaningful connection with nature.

As part of our ongoing Climate Action commitment, sustainability is embedded into our everyday practice—not just on Earth Day, but throughout the year.

Because the smallest actions can make the biggest difference 🌎✨

Food for thought

https://www.facebook.com/share/19m3tEwRbd/?mibextid=wwXIfr

🎅 The big man in red doesn’t appear at Boots & Brambles Forest School — and here’s why…

For me, the true magic of Christmas—and of Santa—lies in the fact that we don’t see him.
The whole premise is built on mystery. As children, we go to sleep so he can visit. We’re told he only arrives once we’re tucked up in bed. He’s unseen, and that’s what makes it magical. ✨️

🎅 Yet today, from the start of November, Santa can be found everywhere: farms, zoos, garden centres, high streets… an entire tour schedule of Santas, all before Advent has even begun. 🎅

In our attempt to make Christmas more magical, I can’t help but feel we’re actually taking the magic away. 🌟

I’ll never forget my toddler, one wet November day, spotting Santa arriving at a local garden centre and asking, “Why is Santa here, in the rain, in November? Shouldn’t he be at the North Pole?” 🦌
And honestly—what could I say? I had no answer.

🎅 I’ve seen local events scramble when they realise two Santas will cross paths in the same village. I’ve watched parents in a panic posting online: “Where can we see a good Santa?”

🎅 When I was a child, there was just one Santa in the local town, and somehow that felt enough—more than enough.

As children grow and begin to question, doesn’t having a different Santa at every turn only make the story harder to believe? ✨️

So at Boots & Brambles, we keep things simple.

We keep the magic in the mystery. Santa doesn’t appear here—not because we don’t value the tradition, but because we value the wonder behind it. The excitement of not seeing him, of imagining, of believing without constant reminders and photo ops.

Sometimes the most magical things are the ones left unseen. ✨

✨ A big thank you to Skip’s Pre-School for welcoming us today and allowing us to capture some truly special moments from our session.

Although I’ve been visiting nurseries for 8 years, this is the first time I’ve been able to share with everyone exactly how our sessions run. I often receive questions about our set-up, what to expect, why I cap the session at 10 per sitting, how hands-on the experience is, and how I support children who may be a little unsure around animals.

My aim whenever I bring my animals into a new environment is always the same: to make the experience as enjoyable and comfortable as possible for both the animals and each individual child. That might mean:

• Giving a confident child the chance to take control of an animal themselves.

• Offering gentle interactions while the animals are in their beds for those who prefer a slower introduction.

• Simply providing the space to watch and listen if direct interaction isn’t for them.

Every child is included, respected, and supported at their own pace.

Here is a little video to give you a glimpse of how our Animalia Encounters sessions run. I hope this helps future nurseries see what’s involved and just how special the experience can be. 💚 18/09/2025

✨ What an incredible morning at SKIPS Pre-School! ✨
We were the lucky winners of a special visit from Animalia, and the children had the most wonderful hands-on experience 🐸🐍🐹🐇🐢🦎

From gently stroking a fluffy rabbit and curious guinea pigs, to bravely holding a corn snake, meeting an Australian tree frog, a tortoise, and even a bearded dragon – the children had the chance to explore, learn and connect with animals in such a memorable way. 💚

A huge thank you to Animalia for bringing this magical learning opportunity to life – the smiles say it all! 🌟
