🌞🌙 Today, a spectacular solar eclipse is sweeping across the northern hemisphere, and here at Giggleswick, we have a rather special connection to eclipses.

Almost 100 years ago, in 1927, the grounds of Giggleswick School were chosen as an official observation post for a total solar eclipse. The area around Giggleswick and Settle was considered one of the best places in Britain to witness the event, attracting thousands of visitors from across the country.

Among them was the Astronomer Royal, Sir Frank Watson Dyson, who gathered here with a team of eminent observers and instruments from the Royal Observatory. From the school grounds, they had an uninterrupted view of the Sun’s corona during the 23 seconds of totality.

The eclipse captured the imagination of the nation, with an estimated 70,000–100,000 people gathering around Giggleswick and Settle to witness this extraordinary event!

We are deeply saddened to announce that former Giggleswick Headmaster Richard Meredith passed away peacefully on Monday 3 August, aged 91.

Richard served as Headmaster from 1970 to 1978, a period that saw many significant developments in the life of the School. Among his lasting achievements was leading the move to co-education in 1976, when Giggleswick became one of the first independent boarding schools in the UK to become co-educational, and the first independent school in the North of England to make the transition.

His vision and leadership helped shape the School we know today, creating opportunities for generations of pupils and leaving a legacy that continues to be celebrated as we mark 50 years of co-education.

Our thoughts are with Richard's family and friends at this sad time.

🏑 OGs vs Pupils Hockey Match – Friday 11 September, 8.00pm

Join us for one of Gigg's favourite sporting traditions – the annual OGs vs Pupils Hockey Match.

Whether you're a seasoned player or haven't picked up a stick in years, everyone is welcome. All ages and abilities are encouraged to take part, and hockey sticks will be available if you need one.

After the final whistle, we usually head to the local for a well-earned drink and a chance to catch up.

Represent Team Giggleswick at the 74th Thames Hare & Hounds Alumni Cross Country Race on Saturday 12 September, 3pm, at Wimbledon Common.

Whether you're a seasoned cross-country runner or simply fancy taking on 5 miles with fellow OGs, we'd love you to join the team. All ages and abilities are welcome!

It was a pleasure to welcome Warwick Brookes back to Giggleswick School Chapel yesterday!

Spurred on by enjoying photographs from OG Day and taking a particular interest in the Order of Service from the recent OG Chapel service, he was keen to see the chapel in person once again.

During his visit, Warwick spent time looking through the information boards on display around the chapel - something that naturally held particular interest for a former history master!

Many thanks to his daughter Gilly for sharing this photo and enabling us to celebrate this special moment.

A wonderful reminder of the lasting impact the chapel has on generations of pupils, staff, and the wider school community.
