A fantastic GCSE Results Day at Giggleswick. đź–¤

Yesterday, our Year 11 pupils celebrated a strong set of GCSE results, reflecting the hard work, determination and commitment they’ve shown throughout their time at Giggleswick.

There were some brilliant achievements across the year group, with particularly strong performances in Geography, History and Physics, alongside an outstanding 100% A* success rate in the Higher Project Qualification.

As Headmaster Sam Hart reflected:

“GCSE results are an important milestone, but they are just one part of a much bigger journey. What matters most is that each pupil can look back and know they have worked hard, challenged themselves and made the most of the opportunities available to them at Giggleswick.”

Strong results, high standards and a community at the heart of it all. đź–¤

Over the past year, we’ve continued to invest in what matters most: our pupils, our families and the experience of being part of Giggleswick.

From absorbing VAT on school fees and meeting all standards in our latest ISI inspection, to strong academic outcomes, results above national averages and the exceptional pastoral and boarding experience at the heart of our school.

But alongside the numbers, results and reports, there’s something that’s harder to measure... the feeling of Giggleswick.

As one of our pupils put it:

🎓 Annabel to study Politics and International Relations at the University of Hull

Annabel has secured a place at the University of Hull to study Politics and International Relations, which she’ll begin after taking a gap year.

One of Annabel’s proudest achievements at Giggleswick has been her involvement in School Choir, particularly having the opportunity to lead the choir during her final year. 🎶

Reflecting on the people who have supported her, Annabel particularly wanted to thank Mrs Coward, Mr Brown and Mr Jones. She described Mrs Coward as always being “one step ahead” and ready to offer help and support whenever it was needed, while Mr Jones’ support within the House has also made a real difference to her experience.

Some of Annabel’s favourite memories are the everyday moments of boarding life, particularly the greater independence of Sixth Form and time spent together in the House.

And what will she miss most? “Definitely my friends. You’re friends with everybody in other years through boarding…” 🖤

🎓 Rebecca to study Theology and Religion at the University of Oxford

After almost five years at Giggleswick, international pupil Rebecca is heading to the University of Oxford to study Theology and Religion.

Rebecca arrived at Giggleswick on a snowy afternoon in January 2022, aged 14, knowing nobody and looking for a new beginning. Reflecting on everything that has happened since, she shared:

“Giggleswick has brought me wonderful friendships, supportive teachers, and many once-in-a-lifetime experiences.”

But perhaps most importantly, her time here has helped Rebecca discover where her interests lie and given her the confidence to pursue them.

“Now, I am at a stage in my life that 14-year-old me could have never dreamed of. I have a clear idea of what area of academia interests or excites me, and I have the courage and ambition to turn the vision in my head into reality.”

🎓 Fran accepted to study Philosophy and Theology at the University of Edinburgh

Fran has secured a place at The University of Edinburgh to study Philosophy and Theology, but before beginning university, she’ll be taking a year out to travel and work abroad across Bali. 🌏

For Fran, some of the proudest moments of her time at Giggleswick have been her academic achievements. She credits Miss Mahler and Mr Womack with supporting her throughout her final two years.

Her advice to pupils joining Gigg?

“Take every opportunity that they throw at you. Here, you just have to grab everything with both hands. All the opportunities are amazing.”

From DofE and CCF Camp to the many other experiences available alongside her studies, Fran feels the opportunities at Giggleswick have given her plenty to take forward into life beyond school.

But it’s the sense of community that has defined her experience here, and was one of the reasons her family chose Giggleswick in the first place.

“It’s the family, community vibe that I got from it. My parents said it when they first came here. You recognise it from the get-go… the way that you’re treated by the teachers, it’s like a family basically.” 🖤

🎓 Piet to study Engineering at Lancaster University

Piet is heading to Lancaster University to study Engineering, with ambitions to pursue a future career as a research engineer.

A real highlight of Piet’s time at Giggleswick has been discovering his passion for Physics. What began as a subject he enjoyed became his favourite, something he credits to the enthusiasm and support of his teachers, particularly Mr Huxtable and Mr Nash.

“It’s just the way they taught, and the love and passion they taught with, that actually made me enjoy it more. If you enjoy something, you’re more likely to put more time in, and obviously that’s going to let you do better, so I’m really thankful for them.”

And his advice for prospective families looking for a boarding school?

“If you already come from a boarding school, the main difference here at Gigg is just how connected it feels. You don’t just live here, you feel a community.”

For Piet, some of the best memories of boarding are also the simplest — living alongside his friends and spending time together every day. He’s also loved getting involved in rugby, despite never considering himself particularly sporty and being part of the team. 🏉🖤

🎓 Lizzie to study Politics, International Studies and Hispanic Studies at the University of Warwick

Lizzie is heading to the University of Warwick to study Politics, International Studies and Hispanic Studies, beginning an exciting new chapter after her time at Giggleswick.

Some of Lizzie’s favourite memories have come from the performing arts. From performing in the Rock Concert to taking to the stage as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, these have been some of the highlights of her time at Gigg. 🎭🎶

But it’s the people she’ll miss the most.

Having been part of the boarding community, Lizzie will miss being with her friends every day, being surrounded by everyone and that feeling of knowing everyone around school. đź–¤

Lizzie takes with her the friendships, experiences and memories that have made her time at Giggleswick so special.

🎓 Julia to study Medicine at Newcastle University

After achieving A* in Chemistry, A* in Biology, A in Maths and A* in her EPQ**, Julia is heading to Newcastle University to study Medicine and Surgery, taking the next step towards her dream career of becoming a doctor. đź©ş

During her time at Giggleswick, Julia fell in love with kayaking and climbing, having decided to try something new and throw herself into the opportunities available to her. They became some of her proudest experiences at Gigg, as she stepped outside her comfort zone and, in her words, was “a little bit brave.”

Her advice to future pupils?

“Just throw yourself in. Try as much as you can, but remember to give yourself time and give yourself breaks and rest. There’s a lot, it’s full on, but you’ll enjoy it.”

And what will she miss most about Gigg?

“Probably my friends, and just being here every day in this beautiful place, walking down the hill and seeing the incredible view… just having them all around me.” 🖤

Julia leaves Giggleswick with plenty of memories and an exciting next chapter ahead.

🎓 Today, we are proud to celebrate the achievements of our Year 13 pupils as they receive their A Level and BTEC results and prepare to take their next steps beyond Giggleswick.

✨ 17% A*
✨ 44% A*–A
✨ 67% A*–B
✨ 91% A*–C
✨ 100% overall pass rate

There were particularly strong performances in Maths and Further Maths, with 83% of grades awarded at A* or A. 🙌

Our leavers are progressing to an impressive range of destinations and pathways, including the University of Oxford, Newcastle University, the University of Warwick, Lancaster University and the University of Edinburgh.

Their chosen courses are equally varied, spanning Medicine and Surgery, Law, Engineering, Philosophy and Theology, Media Production, Acting, Politics and Sustainable Land and Business Management.

Headmaster, Sam Hart said:

“We are proud to support pupils with a wide range of abilities, interests and ambitions. We believe that success is about finding the right pathway for each individual, and our focus is on helping every pupil identify the courses, university or next step where they can thrive and fulfil their potential.”
