I’m Demelza and my husband and me including our lovely little Jack Russell's are Lowe Maintenance. We provide training within arboriculture, horticulture, agricultural, conservation, gamekeeping and forestry to name a few areas with the help of our amazing trainers and assessors. Our aim is to provide every candidate with a positive learning experience through working closely with businesses to meet individual needs and requirements. We offer a comprehensive range of courses at affordable prices and are committed to providing high-quality training. In light of the training we carry out we always welcome contact from woodland owners to discuss the linking of their woodland maintenance and our courses where appropriate. The majority of equipment is provided on the courses however please get in touch for further details in relation to specific courses. Please note we do not provide boots we look after you but you can look after your feet! We also design and manufacture products linked to our industries. Catching up with the Gustharts team at Dales Demo Day 2026, where they joined us for their second year at the show.

From arborist and forestry equipment to STIHL machinery and the latest battery-powered kit, their stand gave visitors the chance to see the equipment up close, ask questions and speak directly with a knowledgeable team.

At Dales Demo Day, Mick from GVA introduced visitors to some of the company’s specialist equipment, including battery-powered tools, a REFORM machine fitted with a front flail and the remote-controlled Raymo mower.

The Raymo certainly drew plenty of attention as it tackled the steep bank during the live demonstration. Operated from a safe distance, machinery like this can reach difficult, uneven or hazardous areas while reducing the need to place an operator directly in harm’s way.

GVA specialises in vegetation management, arboriculture, landscaping and environmental services. Its teams work across highways, infrastructure, countryside and commercial environments, combining practical land-management expertise with modern technology to keep spaces safe, accessible and environmentally responsible.

Thank you to Mick and the GVA team for joining us and giving visitors the opportunity to see this innovative equipment working in real Dales terrain.

Do you know what sheep scab looks like?

It isn’t always obvious at first, but there are a few signs worth keeping an eye out for:

• Sheep rubbing against fences and posts
• Scratching or nibbling at their fleece
• Restlessness
• Loose wool or bare patches
• Sore or thickened skin
• Weight loss
• Affected sheep becoming quiet or moving away from the flock

Sheep scab spreads easily, so if something doesn’t look right, don’t leave it and hope it clears up. Speak to your vet, get a proper diagnosis and agree the right treatment for your flock.

The earlier it’s picked up, the easier it is to deal with and help stop it spreading.

Good training isn’t about rushing through the course content. It’s about making sure every candidate has the time and support they need to understand it properly.

After completing our Safe Use of Brushcutter and Trimmers course, Elizabeth praised Demelza for keeping the session flowing while allowing everyone enough time to consolidate their knowledge before moving on.

That balance between steady progress and individual support is something we work hard to create on every Lowe Maintenance course.

Following on from Fungi Day, we’re keeping our eyes peeled for the incredible variety of fungi popping up around us this October...

It’s a brilliant time of year to spot fungi in woodlands, fields, hedgerows and around the places we’re working.

Some are tiny and easy to miss, while others really stand out, but they’re all part of the natural landscapes we share and work within.

So, if you’re out and about this month, take a moment to look a little closer.

Meet Gary Robinson from JG Paxton & Sons Ltd, one of Lowe Maintenance’s partners and a familiar face at Dales Demo Day.

JG Paxton supplies, services and demonstrates outdoor machinery. This year, Gary brought along a range of Honda quad bikes so visitors could see the machines up close and ask questions about how they’re used.

Our partnership brings together two things people need to work confidently: the right equipment and the training to use it well. That’s part of what makes Demo Day so valuable. Visitors can speak to the people behind the machinery and the people who provide the training, all in one place.

Working with livestock is part of everyday life on the farm. But no matter how many years you've been doing it, there's always room for a little extra caution.

It's often the animals we know best that catch us off guard. A cow protecting her calf, sheep becoming unsettled during handling, or pigs reacting to an unfamiliar situation can quickly turn a routine job into something far more dangerous.

A few simple habits can make all the difference.

🐄 Give animals space and time to respond to you.

🐑 Stay alert to changes in behaviour, even with familiar livestock.

🚜 Check gates, hurdles and handling systems before getting started.

👥 Think twice before tackling a higher-risk job on your own.

And perhaps most importantly, don't let the pressure of getting the job finished push safety down the list.
Years of experience teach us a lot, but they don't make us immune to accidents.

It's about looking after yourself, those working alongside you and making sure everyone gets home safely at the end of the day.

Demelza’s been out in the woods, and for Fungus Day she’s sharing some of the beautiful fungi she spotted along the way.

From tiny mushrooms tucked into the moss to fungi growing on fallen wood, it’s the little details that make an autumn walk so interesting. They’re also doing important work, helping to break down dead material and return nutrients to the soil.

When there’s stock to look after, work to finish and the weather to work around, it can be easy to put your own wellbeing at the bottom of the list.

This World Mental Health Day, we’re encouraging our farming and land-based community to make time for a proper check-in.

Ask a colleague how they’re doing. Give someone space to talk. If you’re finding things difficult yourself, speak to someone you trust.

At Lowe Maintenance, we value the conversations that happen around the training as much as the skills being taught. A welcoming environment and a listening ear can make a difference.

Looking after our rural community means looking after its people, too.
