Selkirk High School Horticulture A page to share the various things we do in the horticulture department. We teach plant propagation, soft landscaping, allotment gardening, Rural enterprise.

The horticulture department are passionate about teaching students about nature, horticulture and Rural Skills. We are always adding new units to suit the needs of students and to support their Rural career pathway, this includes Gamekeeping units and grass maintenance. We also have various craft projects such as furniture up cycling, recycling pallets and a zero waste policy. We garden organicall

A new academic year means a new S3 engineering group and a new tractor project. This year we have a Fordson Dexta to restore. Work started straight away with stripping body work and preparing to pressure test the engine.

Students enjoyed a very informative visit to the Royal Highland Show today. They took part in a Salmon Aquaculture workshop with RHET Scottish Borders Countryside Initiative and a machinery simulation workshop with Scottish Machinery Ring. Students then looked at diversification of rural businesses, variety of rural businesses and range of agricultural machinery including vintage machinery.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Gardener to join the team , near St Boswells. Set within 26 acres surrounding the historic Mertoun House, this hands-on role offers the chance to work across productive and ornamental gardens maintained to an exceptional standard.

The successful candidate will assist with:
🌱 Fruit and vegetable cultivation
🌸 Maintaining flower borders and ornamental displays
✂️ Pruning, hedge cutting and seasonal horticultural tasks
🌳 Tree care and estate grounds maintenance
🚜 Operating and maintaining garden machinery
👥 Supporting estate visitors and educational groups

What we're looking for:
✔ Horticultural qualification (SVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent) or relevant experience
✔ Strong attention to detail and commitment to excellence
✔ Full UK driving licence
✔ PA1/PA6 and First Aid qualifications beneficial but not essential

Thank you to every one who came to see our tractor today and to listen to our students and staff talk about the learning experience and next steps for the projects.
Thank you also to Border Vintage Agricultural Association - bvaa for inviting us to the event and giving us the opportunity to showcase the project.
We are overwhelmed with the amount of positive comments about the project and the learning experience offered to our students. The overall number one comment of the day has to be “I wish this was available in my school”.
