☀️ IMPORTANT – EARLY SCHOOL CLOSURE TODAY ☀️

Dear Parents and Carers,

Further to the email sent yesterday, school will be closing to all pupils at 1:30pm today.

The school gates on The Field and New Lane will be open, and we ask that you collect your child from the playground.

Many of our classroom thermometers are already recording temperatures higher than those outside. Although we have cooling fans in the classrooms, the indoor temperatures continue to rise, and we have very limited shaded areas outdoors.

Closing the school early is not a decision we have taken lightly. However, the welfare of our pupils and staff must remain our priority during this period of extreme heat. We already have a number of pupils reporting that they are feeling unwell, and temperatures are forecast to increase further as the day progresses.

If your child attends Pre-School, collection will take place after the Graduation Assembly.

Please note that the early school closure also means that After School Club will not be running today. If you have a place booked, this will be cancelled automatically and no charge will be made.

If someone else will be collecting your child, please email [email protected] with the name of the person collecting your child and a password that they can provide on arrival to ensure a safe collection.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Rachel Ray
Headteacher

Last week, our Year 5 pupils spent the day at Selby High School as part of their transition programme. They took part in a variety of engaging lessons, including Science, History, PE and English, giving them a real taste of life at secondary school. The children had a fantastic day, embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and represented our school brilliantly! They're feeling very excited for the future as they begin to prepare for their move to high school after Year 6!

A huge thank you to everyone at Selby High School for making us feel so welcome and providing such a positive and enjoyable day for our pupils.

Our pre-school children had a fantastic time on their trip to Lotherton Hall and loved every part of their exciting day!

From the coach journey and exploring Wildlife World to playing in the park, building dens and enjoying a picnic together, there were so many wonderful experiences to enjoy. The highlight for everyone, though, was definitely seeing the penguins! 🐧

Year 1/2 enjoyed heading out on a local visit to explore the area around our school. The children carefully observed and recorded the different human and physical features they could see, putting their geography learning into practice.

Dear Parent/Carer

Urgent Message – Early Collection Time at 1.30pm

Following the updated weather forecast and the significant rise in temperature this afternoon, our classrooms are becoming increasingly uncomfortable despite the measures we have put in place to keep them as cool as possible.

The safety and wellbeing of our pupils and staff is our priority. Therefore, we are offering parents and carers the opportunity to collect their child(ren) early at 1.30pm today. Gates will remain open until 1.45pm. If you arrange for someone other than a Parent/Carer to collect your child please email [email protected] with their name and password.

We fully appreciate that this will not be possible for all of our working families, and school will remain open until the end of the normal school day at 3.15pm for those children who are unable to be collected early.

YEAR 5 ONLY : Please note that this early collection does not apply to our Year 5 pupils who are currently attending an event at the high school. These pupils should be collected from the Selby Abbey School at 3.15pm as normal.

If you are able to collect your child, please:
• Collect at 1.30pm.
• Enter via the gates leading onto the field and make your way to the junior playground.
• Staff will be available to assist you and safely dismiss pupils.
• Please be patient while staff register children as they leave school to ensure every child is accounted for.
• Please do not come to the main visitors' entrance, as our office staff will also be supporting the collection process from the playground.

YEAR 6 ONLY: If you wish for your year 6 child to walk home at 1.30pm we must receive written consent from you – please email [email protected]

For families who normally use Wrap Around Care, if you collect your child either at 1.30pm or at the end of the school day (3.15pm), there will be no charge for Wrap Around Care today. Unfortunately, the Wrap Around Care room has also become exceptionally hot this afternoon, so we would encourage early collection where possible.

We have done everything we can to avoid closing the school due to the extreme temperatures and have worked hard to keep classrooms as safe and comfortable as possible. If you are in a position to collect your child early today, we would be extremely grateful, as this will help us to reduce the number of children remaining in these very warm conditions.

Thank you for your continued understanding, patience and support. As always, the safeguarding, health and wellbeing of our pupils remains at the heart of every decision we make.

Kind regards
