Read School, Drax, has been a focal point for education in the Selby-Goole area for over 350 years, first as Drax Grammar School and as Read School, since 1967. Now a co-educational boarding and day school, Read offers a wide range of academic studies at GCSE and A Level, together with a full programme of sports, drama, music, CCF and recreational activity. High standards are expected in terms of endeavour, behaviour and manners, rewarded by attending a school where pupils are respected, valued and can be the best they can be. The school welcomes young people of all abilities with academically able pupils, achieving high grades in public examinations, working alongside children of more modest abilities with mutual respect for each other’s talents.

🌟 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Finlay (Year 11)🌟

We are proud to celebrate Year 11 pupil Finlay, who has once again been selected for the SnowSport England Park & Pipe Team for 2026/27! In recognition of his exceptional talent, dedication, and potential, Finlay has also been invited to join the prestigious TJ Freestyle Academy programme.

Selection to the national squad is a huge achievement, requiring athletes to meet rigorous performance criteria. The programme provides elite-level coaching in slopestyle and big air, paving a direct pathway towards national competitions, Team GB, World Cups, and future Olympic pathways.

Finlay's commitment to his passion is second to none. On top of attending 3 to 4 weekly training sessions in the UK, his selection includes an impressive lineup of international training camps and competitions across Europe this season:

🇧🇪 27–30 Sept 2026: Genk, Belgium

🇦🇹 17–31 Oct 2026: Hintertux, Austria

🇦🇹 12–19 Dec 2026: Absolute Park, Wagrain, Austria

🇦🇹 8 Jan – 11 Apr 2027: Penken Park, Mayrhofen, Austria (including competing at The Brits Freestyle Championships!)

Through elite coaching, specialist facilities, and relentless discipline, Finlay continues to demonstrate true resilience and ambition in pursuit of a career in professional freestyle skiing.

Working with the RAF cadets at Read School is reward enough with all the fun we have on Thursday afternoons and on our adventures on camps, flying and all the other off site activities.

However, today was very special when Flt Lt Oliver was presented with a Commandant’s Meritorious Service Award.
The award is given to RAFAC staff who have ‘gone above and beyond’.
In her comments, Wg Cdr Barton, OC Wing commented on the work done to integrate CCF and the ATC to provide the best possible experience for our cadets.
Flt Lt Oliver was also recently appointed to the role of CCF(RAF) Staff Officer North Region.

Following the many achievements of our cadets, which were celebrated in the first National Cadet Week, this has definitely been a week to remember!!

The sun shone on a blustery autumn morning as Hipperholme Grammar made their way over to the 10 Acre Field.

​The Under-12/13 team delivered an excellent performance that highlighted just how much progress they have made over the course of this half-term. All the boys pulled together exceptionally well, combining a series of well-worked passages of play. Big tackles, strong positional shape, and growing confidence on the ball secured a thoroughly pleasing performance and a comfortable victory. Tries were scored by Tommy T, Tom O, Elliott T, James W, and Johann H. MOTM could have gone to any number of players this week, but the honour went to Hugh E for his impressive contribution. A huge well done also goes to the boys who stepped in to join the opposition ranks to even up the numbers, displaying admirable sportsmanship.🤝

​The Under-14/15 squad faced a challenging build-up to their match, hit by injury, illness, and unavailability. This led to the last-minute inclusion of German pupils Justin and Max, who stepped up brilliantly to help complete the side. Under difficult circumstances, the squad delivered a strong, high-spirited performance. Every player showed great commitment and work ethic, digging deep in the closing stages to hold on for a hard-fought and well-deserved 17-14 victory. Tries were scored by Rhys H, Lincoln M, and Ethan S. MOTM was awarded to Zac M for showing excellent game control at fly-half alongside impressive defensive work.👏

​A sterling job was done by the coaches and referees in allowing a brilliant morning of rugby, and a big thank you goes to the large crowd on the sidelines.💚

This evening’s farewell disco was a beautiful celebration of the connection and friendships made over the last week- so many lovely memories made. We’re going to miss you all- safe travels home! 🇬🇧 🇩🇪

🎖️ National Cadet Week – Life Beyond the Classroom! 🇬🇧

At Read School, our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is about so much more than marching and uniforms!

From drill and obstacle courses to first aid, survival skills, navigation and overnight camps, our cadets are developing skills that will stay with them for life.

Yesterday saw the return of our highlight event, the annual Moloney Music Competition!

We were blown away by over 50 pupil performances spanning Year 1 right through to Year 13. The stage was filled with a wonderful variety of instruments- from the harp, electric guitar, and violin to the flute, clarinet, piano, and voice!

Whether it was pupils taking to the stage for the very first time, new starters showing off their talents, or our senior musicians delivering spellbinding, advanced pieces, the level of enthusiasm was unmatched.

A huge thank you to our guest adjudicator, Mr Tom Wilks (Lay Clerk at Wakefield Cathedral and RNCM vocal graduate), who spent the day listening to our 54 young performers and praised both the outstanding musical quality and the fantastic turnout.

While every single performer did themselves proud, a huge congratulations to our category winners and cup recipients:

Read School, Drax Year 10 pupil, Daniel is going from strength to strength on the racetrack as he wraps up a phenomenal first year in Junior Racing. Making History at Read School!

Have you ever wondered what goes into capturing our entire school family in one single frame?

Everyone felt so proud seeing our whole school family together in one place.
