✨ The Aurora: A Spectacular Natural Light Show! 🌌
What an incredible sight! Our director captured the beautiful aurora tonight, offering a wonderful opportunity to appreciate one of nature’s most fascinating phenomena. 💚💜
But what exactly causes the aurora?
🌍 It all begins with the Sun. The Sun releases a continuous stream of charged particles known as the solar wind. When these particles reach Earth, our planet’s magnetic field guides some of them towards the polar regions.
⚡ A collision of energy and atmosphere. As these energetic particles collide with gases in Earth’s upper atmosphere, they transfer energy to oxygen and nitrogen atoms and molecules. When these gases release that energy, they produce the beautiful colours we see dancing across the night sky.
🎨 Why the different colours?
* 💚 Green: Usually produced by oxygen at lower altitudes.
* ❤️ Red: Produced by oxygen higher in the atmosphere.
* 💜 Blue and purple: Often associated with nitrogen.
🌠 Why can we see the aurora in the UK? During periods of increased solar activity, geomagnetic storms can expand the auroral oval towards lower latitudes, sometimes making the Northern Lights visible much farther south than usual.
