A message of support for our school community

We are aware of an incident involving a member of the public experiencing severe emotional distress near the level crossing on Tuesday evening. We understand that some of our students may have witnessed what happened.

We are relieved to understand that the incident came to a positive resolution. However, witnessing a distressing event can affect people in different ways, even if they weren't directly involved.

If your child has been affected or would like to talk to someone, support is available in school through:

Sarah Langridge (Designated Safeguarding Lead),
Year Managers,
Key Stage Directors,
PD Tutors
or any other member of staff they feel comfortable approaching.

There are also organisations available to offer support outside school, including:

YoungMinds – Text YM to 85258 for free, 24/7 crisis support.
Childline – www.childline.org.uk
Samaritans – Call 116 123, free, 24/7.

Please reassure your child that it's okay to talk about how they're feeling and that they don't have to deal with difficult emotions alone.

We are here to support our students and families. 💜

The Selby High Careers Fair is coming soon! 🚀

We are delighted to announce that we will be holding our annual Careers Fair on Tuesday 1st December. 📅

The event will once again take place in our Sports Hall and the day will be divided equally between all 5 year groups (over 1150 students), giving every member of our school community the opportunity to engage with your organisation.

Our Careers Fair has always proved to be an excellent opportunity to inspire and inform our young people by sharing information about career pathways, apprenticeships, further training and employment opportunities within your organisation.

A number of organisations have already signed up, If you would like to attend the fair and/or highlight your organisation through other school initiatives (careers fair, mock interviews, site visits, work experience), please register your interest directly with Sharon Baron: [email protected] 📢

Thank you for your support 💜

Talking to a pupil about their wellbeing can feel daunting, particularly when you are unsure what to say or worried about hearing something concerning.

Our latest guide reminds educators that they do not need to be specialists to provide meaningful support.

The guide explores:
• Building warm, trusting relationships
• Choosing a safe and appropriate place to talk
• Using side-by-side conversations to reduce pressure
• Staying calm when a pupil shares a concern
• Being clear and honest about confidentiality
• Knowing when to involve safeguarding colleagues or seek support yourself

It also includes practical conversation starters to help staff open discussions gently and give pupils space to talk when they are ready.

Looksmaxxing is an online trend focused on improving physical appearance, particularly among boys and young men.

While some content centres on grooming, skincare, diet and exercise, other parts of the trend can promote questionable advice, extreme practices and unrealistic expectations.

Our latest guide explores key concerns, including:
• Pressure around male appearance and body image
• Misleading or potentially dangerous advice
• Obsessive behaviours and declining self-worth
• Mental health concerns
• Exposure to increasingly extreme online communities

It also shares practical advice for parents and educators on recognising looksmaxxing terminology, noticing changes in behaviour and starting supportive conversations about appearance, influencers and online expectations.

INTRODUCING SELBY STREAKS! 🦢

We’re excited to introduce Selby Streaks, our new initiative designed to recognise and celebrate students for building positive attendance habits throughout the school year.

Students will work their way along a 39-week pathway, building their streak one week at a time. As their streak grows, they’ll reach milestones and unlock rewards along the way. 🌟

📅 We’re currently in Week 4!
That means students who have been present throughout the first four weeks are already well on their way - just three and a half more weeks of attendance will take them to their first Selby Streaks milestone! 🥉

If your child has already had some time away from school, they haven’t missed their chance. A streak can begin again at any point, so every student still has the opportunity to build their streak, reach milestones and earn rewards. There’s always a new streak to aim for. ..

🥉 6 weeks – Bronze: Custom Pen
🥈 11 weeks – Silver: In-School Celebration Event Invite
🥇 16 weeks – Gold: Tray Bake Voucher
💫 22 weeks – Platinum: In-School Celebration Event Invite
💎 28 weeks – Diamond: Prize Selection
🏆 35 weeks – Elite: End of Year Attendance Trip Invite

We also want Selby Streaks to be fair and achievable. Medical appointments will not count against a student’s streak. Holidays, illness and exclusions will reset a streak, but students can begin building a new one as soon as they return to school.

🎁 Milestone rewards are awarded once, but students can continue progressing towards their next milestone throughout the year.

We’re looking forward to celebrating the commitment, consistency and progress of our students as they see just how long they can make their Selby Streak! 🦢👍

Whether you’re already on Week 4 or starting a brand-new streak - every week counts! 💜
