Now into my 25th year of teaching and still loving it.

Teaching is and always will be my passion. It was my own teachers that inspired me and gave me the confidence to believe I could. I was the first in my family to go to university and join a profession.
I have worked in secondary schools, colleges and adult settings. For
me teaching is about getting the best out of the learners, building their confidence, and celebrating success. Maths isn’t easy. My wealth of experience allows me to help each learner by listening to them and teaching them in a way that works for them.
I am always keen to improve my practice, so being and examiner with Edexcel has given me invaluable insight into the exams process which I share with my GCSE learners.

Working for Kip McGrath Selby isn’t like work at all. I enjoy being in the centre and being able to teach learners in a nurturing and supportive setting totally different from school.

Outside of the classroom, I am a mum and a grandma so life can be hectic. I enjoy the
outdoors and walking the dog to a café for a cake and a Yorkshire brew.

Meet John - maths teacher
I'm John and I have been a teacher since 2012. Before that, I was a journalist at the BBC where I enjoyed a very varied career that was a lot of fun. However, teaching was something I had always wanted to do, so I made the decision to switch and haven't looked back. I started as a history teacher but transitioned into maths after becoming fascinated by the subject. Because I didn't come from a maths background, I can easily understand why some students find maths hard, and I see my job as helping them to join the dots together. I have three children and outside of work I enjoy eating out and following rugby league.

Meet Caroline - Primary specialist

I have been a teacher for longer than I have not! I’ve worked in all areas from pre-school and early years to KS3 and 4. Most of my teaching life has been in KS2, and I know everything you need to know about SATS. I love teaching and working with children and helping develop both confidence and knowledge in my students.

Outside of teaching I’m a mum to 3 kids, 1 old dog, 1 feral cat and 2 (often upside down) goldfish. I love reading, gardening, and keeping fit… and the odd glass of wine.

I started working for Kip McGrath Selby in January 2021 after Ruth had won a school contract through the catch-up program and National Tutoring where I taught online to students in kS2 maths and English. I am also one of the Alternative Provision teachers and work with students who struggle in mainstream lessons.

Meet Ruth - owner of Kip McGrath Selby

Kip McGrath Tutoring is in its seventh year and we have taught over 500 students and 15681 lessons!

Education and teaching have always been a great passion of mine ever since a teacher at secondary school inspired me to succeed and showed real belief in my ability that I was good enough to go to university and become a teacher, since then I have never looked back.
I have over 30 years teaching experience in various educational settings – I started my teaching career working in an international school in Qatar teaching primary and secondary school children and from there I moved to work in a secondary school near Doncaster. I bring a breadth of knowledge and experience to Kip McGrath Selby, having been a teacher for 30 years and a GCSE and A-Level exam marker.
Outside of Kip McGrath Selby I have three dogs: two chocolate Labradors and one cocker spaniel. The cocker spaniel is called Mavis, and she is the official Kip dog, often in the centre sleeping next to students and helping them focus on their studies – she is very good at calming some of the autistic students we have in the centre.
