Our HE Animal Welfare Science students finished this years South African adventure at the Ya Mati Camp, soaking up the escarpment views and river sounds before an actionโpacked final few days.
At Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre, they went behind the scenes, meeting with staff, learning about the devastating impacts of snaring and mass poisoning, and hearing how release rates vary by species, injury and reserve availability. They met resident ambassadors, including the infamous honey badger Stoffel, and joined an intimate talk on the challenges of raising wild orphans without human imprinting.
The group also completed a handsโon reptile orientation at Hoedspruit Reptile Centre, covering venomous species ID, first aid and safe handling. The trip closed with a scenic drive up the escarpment to the Three Rondevals viewpoint, standing above Blyde River Canyon felt like being on the edge of the world.
Huge thanks to African Insight Academy for their commitment to experiential learning and delivering these trips. Dates are already booked for next year and a fresh, exciting itinerary is being designed in partnership with AIA and our trip leader.

Our Animal Welfare Students' time in Kruger National Park, during its centenary year, has given them an extraordinary window into largeโscale conservation in action. With expert guidance from the African Insight Academy team, students have been able to deepen their understanding through rich field interpretation, ecological context, and genuine experiential learning that simply canโt be replicated in a classroom.
Across the park, students explored the contrasts between national park management and private reserve models, discussing realโworld challenges such as poaching pressures, community partnerships, and the complexities of managing high elephant densities in a dynamic landscape.
Wildlife sightings have been exceptional. Highlights include leopard, spotted hyena, painted dogs, Nile crocodiles, hippos, and iconic bird species such as bateleur, whiteโbacked vultures, brown snake eagle and the endangered southern ground hornbill. These encounters have helped students connect ecological theory with lived experience, reinforcing why immersive field learning is so powerful.
A huge appreciation goes to the African Insight guides, whose knowledge, passion, and commitment to conservation have shaped this experience into something truly transformative for our students.
