🍯🐝 WE HAVE HONEY!! 🐝🍯

After a crazy busy year we have finally found the time to get some of our honey into jars ready to go!

We have been busy expanding our collection of hives this year doubling in numbers 🥵

We now have spring set and summer mix for sale at £5 a jar!

One of the new queens that the bees made themselves seems the one they had wasn’t up to their liking 🤦‍♀️😂

Who lives in a colony ..? 🤔

These are such amazing creatures, one queen alone lays the eggs to build the entire colony anywhere from 1-2000 bees to 50-60,000 bees (and potentially more 🙈)

The worker bees (the ladies 💁🏼‍♀️) are responsible for pretty much everything 🙈 .. the newly hatched and young bees are the ‘nurse’ bees; they look after all the eggs, brood and the queen! Older bees will be forager bees and will be the ones you see on your flowers and in the gardens.

The drones (Male bees 💁🏼‍♂️) only really have one purpose…. 🙄
Unlike the other bees male bees don’t have stingers 🙌🏻

One of our favourite bits …taking off the honey 😋🍯

Once enough is ready, we will take so much honey from the bees, this as bee keepers is one of the best bits of the job.

All the hard work that has gone in to feeding the bees and keeping them healthy through winter, building them up and all the care taken through swarm season starts to pay off 🤞🏻

Feeling Broody! 🐝

In beekeeping, bee brood or brood refers to the eggs, larvae and pupae of honeybees.

You can tell a lot about the bees from the pattern of the brood, this picture was taken tonight from one of our hives…. I think it’s safe to say the pattern is good! 🙈

Bees will lay their brood in almost a rugby ball shape through the hive, they will then fill around the edges with food (honey 🍯) in preparation for the new baby bees hatching!

They’re excellent pollinators 👍🏻

Usually friendly as they’re doing busy working

They can only sting once! 🐝

What else would you want to be doing on a Sunday evening!

A lovely trip down to see a good friend and fellow bee keeper Dave at Bay View Bees to help extract some of my honey!

Managed to get it spun out and bucketed now to run through some filters after it’s being warmed up and ready to jar!

If anyone is interested in learning more about bees or starting out Dave runs courses and can help with all your needs even selling all the types of honey!

Bees are hard work 🐝

Each frame is built up by us (James mainly 😬) that’s hours upon hours of nailing bits of wood together and putting in the wax foundations.

Each box can have up to 11 frames in it

These need to be turned around so quickly during the busy season purely to keep up with the number of bees in the hive increasing.

The image on the left is how the frames look before going in the hive, the image on the right is how the honey frames look when they’ve been drawn out and filled

On average 22,700 trips are required for bees to make enough honey to fill a single jar! 😱

So in 2019 we started our ‘bee journey’ 🐝I have to admit, upon them arriving .. I was not impressed one bit 🤣Now I can’t...

So in 2019 we started our ‘bee journey’ 🐝

I have to admit, upon them arriving .. I was not impressed one bit 🤣

Now I can’t wait to get involved and get in and see how they’re doing

We started with two small hives, suffered losses in our first winter but have pulled through strong this year 😁🤞🏻

We now have a total of 5 hives 🤩

We will soon be taking off our spring honey from the bees 🍯 and I cannot wait !
