Can you settle an argument, please?

Our journey so far… 🌈

This time last year, things looked very different.

I was struggling to return to school after the summer holidays and, after the first day back, everything came to a head. I ended up being signed off work and by the beginning of October, I still wasn’t able to return.

Megan and I spoke about me doing a little tutoring in the evenings to bring in some money. Two days and one very sleepless night later, the beginnings of The Sensory Booth were created.

The original plan was simple — online evening tutoring, mainly primary maths and literacy.

To help get started, I even sold my beloved kayak to pay for some resources and subscriptions!

Then we put The Sensory Booth out into the world… and within 48 hours we had several enquiries.

Very quickly, the vision changed. We began focusing much more on supporting children with SEND and neurodiversities, young people who were out of school, and families looking for something different from traditional education.

A few months later, we had a cabin installed in the garden so we could offer face-to-face sessions too. That opened even more doors, including the opportunity to work with Peterborough City Council.

Then things grew again, and Megan was able to drop a day at school to join The Sensory Booth.

And this weekend, we’ve upgraded the cabin again and finally had electricity installed properly. 💡

This week we welcome three new families, taking us to 20 children and young people that we now support every week.

It’s honestly hard to believe how much has changed in a year.

I’m incredibly grateful to every family who has trusted us with their child’s education, everyone who has liked, shared or recommended The Sensory Booth, and everyone who has supported us along the way.

But most of all, I need to thank my family. None of this would have happened without their love, patience and support while I chased an idea that started with one difficult moment.

I’m not looking back.

The future feels exciting for The Sensory Booth — but even more importantly, it feels exciting for our family. 💛🌈

Today, during one of our sessions, we were learning about women during the First World War.

We talked about how, as so many men went away to fight, women stepped into jobs that had previously been seen as “men’s work” — all while living in a society where women still had far fewer rights and opportunities than men.

My young person thought about it for a moment, giggled, and said:

“That must have been a real ego burst for all the men. All of a sudden, the women were doing all the jobs they were told they couldn’t do before — and they were doing a great job!”

I absolutely loved this.

It wasn’t just remembering a historical fact. She was thinking about attitudes towards women, the contribution they made to the war effort, how society began to change, and how those changes still affect her life today.

These are the moments I love in teaching — when a young person takes what we are learning and makes a connection that goes far beyond the worksheet or lesson.

🌈 Meet Megan! Megan is a qualified teacher who works full-time in a specialist SEND school and is now also delivering 1:1 sessions through The Sensory Booth. Her training includes QTS, specialist autism training, Makaton Levels 1 & 2, Attention Autism, phonics and trauma-informed practice. You’ll be seeing much more of Megan as she supports children both online and in person.

A little reintroduction from us 👋🌈

As we get ready to return to work, we wanted to say hello again and reintroduce ourselves.

We’re Zach and Megan, and together we run The Sensory Booth.

We feel incredibly lucky to work with such wonderful children, young people and families, and we’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone back.

We’ve got lots planned for the year ahead and we’re excited to continue building relationships, supporting learning and creating a space where young people can feel comfortable, understood and able to be themselves.

Thank you to all of the families who continue to trust us to be part of their child’s journey. We’re really looking forward to seeing you all again and to everything this year will bring. 🌈
