🎤 An Evening of Conversation — Deal

Next Thursday, 22 October, I’ll be joining Sue Ross at Golf Road Community Centre in Deal for an informal evening of conversation and reflection.

We’ll be exploring my journey into language teaching, the joys and challenges of self-employment, my work with the The Men’s Circle - East Kent, and the importance of community and human connection.

How do we find our way into doing what we love? …and why does bringing people together matter so much?

I’m very much looking forward to sharing a little of my story, answering Sue’s questions, and hopefully enjoying some interesting conversations along the way! 😊

You don't need to speak perfect French. You don't need to be particularly confident. ...and you certainly don't need to know anybody beforehand!

Our monthly Language & Culture Evenings at The Red Cow - Sandwich, here in the old medieval town of Sandwich, have become wonderfully sociable occasions, bringing people together over good food, a drink, and plenty of conversation...

The French? Well, that's just what gets us talking! 😊

Whether your French is a little rusty, you've been learning for years, or you're simply looking for an opportunity to practise in a friendly, informal setting, you're very welcome to join us.

This month, we're exploring « Entre tradition et superstition… » — from lucky charms and strange beliefs, to French and British traditions, all through our popular speed-chatting format.

🇫🇷🇮🇹 A little autumn language update! 🍂

Last month’s Language & Culture Evening at The Red Cow - Sandwich was another brilliant evening — and probably one of our liveliest yet!

We had French speed-chatting, plenty of conversation, some new faces joining us for the first time, and lots of connections being made along the way. These evenings have really started to develop a lovely little community of their own, and it’s great to see people coming along simply to practise, meet others, and enjoy languages together (not forgetting the cheese and w**e!) 🇫🇷🇮🇹🇪🇸

📅 Our next Language & Culture Evening will be on Tuesday 20 October, from 7.00–9.00pm, at the Red Cow in Sandwich.

As usual, everyone is welcome — you absolutely don’t need to be fluent! All bookings for the evening should be made directly through dear Nina at the Red Cow.

Meanwhile, the autumn language courses are getting underway…

🇫🇷 My daytime French course at Sandwich Jubilee Centre has now started — and is officially FULLY BOOKED! A huge thank you to everyone who has joined us for this course 🙏🏻

🇮🇹 Daytime Italian and 🇫🇷 Evening French will both be starting very soon, and there are still a few places available on each. Both will be held at The Fleur-De-Lis Hotel, Sandwich.

If you’ve been thinking about brushing up an old language, getting back into something you studied years ago, or starting something new, there’s still time to join us...

Payment plans are also available if spreading the cost makes things a little easier.

I’m really pleased to be launching two new 10-week language courses in Sandwich this autumn, both starting on Monday 12th October 😊

🇮🇹 Daytime Italian — 12.30–2.00pm
🇫🇷 Evening French — 7.00–8.30pm
📍 Fleur de Lis hotel - Sandwich, Sandwich

Both courses are built around what I value most in language learning: conversation, culture, confidence, and actually using the language — all in a friendly, relaxed, small-group setting.

Whether you’re looking to build on the basics, dust off language skills you haven’t used for a while, or simply get more confident speaking, I’d love to hear from you...

After our little summer hiatus, our Language & Culture Evenings return on Tuesday 15th September, 7–9pm — and we're heading back to France! 🇫🇷

This time, we'll be bringing back our popular speed-chatting format, with an autumnal theme: changing seasons, slowing down a little, changing routines, and all the little things that come with this time of year... 🍂

Don't worry if your French is a little rusty! These evenings are relaxed, informal, and open to different levels — it's about having a go, meeting people, practising some French, and enjoying yourself 😊

🇫🇷 …and that’s a wrap on our first French Fun Club! 🇫🇷

A small beginning this summer, perhaps, but hopefully the first of many. It’s been a real pleasure introducing French in a way that is relaxed, engaging and, above all, FUN! 🤩

One thing particularly important to me when working with young people is respecting their voice and their boundaries. Although I had parental permission to take photographs, I also asked both children themselves. Stanley preferred not to be photographed at all, while Ava was happy to be photographed without showing her face — and this was the result…

Both choices were absolutely fine. Young people deserve to be listened to, too 🙏🏻

Merci to The Drill Hall Sandwich for giving this little idea a home, and to Ava and Stanley for being part of the very first one 🇫🇷

The first French Fun Club is underway! 🇫🇷

Today marked the first of our four summer workshops here at The Drill Hall. We began with the very basics — ‘Bonjour’, ‘salut’, ‘ça va?’, and ‘au revoir’ — and before long, our young learners were already greeting one another in French 🗣️

It's a small group this time, which has actually been a lovely opportunity to give each child plenty of encouragement and speaking practice.
My aim has always been simple: to help children discover that learning a language can be fun, relaxed and something to look forward to each week 😊

Merci to everyone who's supported this new venture so far, especially Ali and her team at The Drill Hall. There are still a few places available if you'd like your child to join us over the remaining 3 sessions in August (the next 3 Wednesdays)! 🙏🏻
