🤔Progress towards Proficiency Transforming Education for Autism

I’m always moved by the incredible success stories of autistic individuals who can expressively type out their thoughts and often advocate for this population. Whether we see this in-person and across social media, these moments of triumph inspire us all! Early on in my journey, I worked with a young man who had his spelling breakthrough after just twenty minutes on the letter-board. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working with countless individuals who’ve achieved quick success after starting sessions, often spelling expressively within a year of starting.

Many of the individuals and families who we support (at Transforming Education for Autism) have had more challenging (and longer) journeys, with immense sensory/emotional/motor issues, dysregulation, executive functioning issues (like suppressing impulses) and obsessions impacting their sessions (and their daily lives). These individuals have to work so hard as building their proficiency takes time
💪More personalised input is often needed (with specific strategies outside of the ‘typical pathway’ being required), more consistency from the family (which can be hard when progress is slow and when life can be manic) and other therapies/methods to support too. Proficiency can take years for some families which can feel painfully drawn-out when you’re supporting your child to share their thoughts.

If you are a family who is on a longer pathway towards expressive spelling, we’re all behind you! You and your child’s/ adult’s success isn’t defined by speed or ease but by your dedication to providing enriching learning experiences with opportunities for participation and growth! Keep going, it is so worth it!

Well done to all contributors of the fifth issue of The Drop magazine - created by autistic individuals who have learnt to spell out their thoughts. 🎉🎉🎉 this is a great issue where contributors asked questions to each other - we loved the insights! ❤️

We did have to hold one or two pieces back as we ran out of time - we’ll make sure these are put into the next issue 😊 Thanks to everyone that helped make this happen 😀👏

We've had a busy admin morning, catching up on all emails! If we haven't replied to you, give us another nudge 🙂 Sorry for any delays in getting back to you.

Exciting Update: Since Ellie joined the team, we've been typing up/formatting all our lesson plans and we're finally getting round to putting them online! 🥳 We have everything from greek myths to science! These lessons are tried and tested 👍

We're also finishing an Expressive Communication Support Handbook/ Course to empower parents/professionals with the necessary skills to help develop expressive communication. This programme helps students move from one-word, known responses to constructing sentences! Watch this space 😁

Woo hoo Attention new/new-ish families in the UK - we are running a ‘summer special’ parent enrolment programme! Without being too dramatic - this could be the summer that changes your child’s life!

Our parent enrolment programme typically runs over 4 weeks (with weekly online sessions with video feedback/ key content as well as a month’s worth of lesson plans and a handbook with key content). This is to get you (and your child/ adult) going!!

We realise a lot of families will be away over the summer, so attending 4 online sessions might be difficult. We’re throwing this out there for interested families- who could do:

Session 1: 10am -12am, July 20th on zoom. (From here, you’ll get started!)

Sessions 2: Meet in-person at a central bham venue - 10-4pm, July 27th
(We’ll dive into theory, practice together and watch some recordings from your previous week of practising)

Follow up feedbacks: you’ll then be able to select two dates (spaced apart through the holidays) to attend some Zoom feedback and support sessions with others.

Send an email to [email protected] if you are interested- (we need to know numbers by 3rd July to run the in-person day in Bham, otherwise we will convert to a zoom day)

Do sessions have to be based around an educational topic?

Not at all - everything has the potential to make a great session 😁
This week we have enjoyed sessions:
- listening to music/ discussing the lyrics
- hearing strange facts
- looking at sewage systems

Balance is everything!

Attention: Zoom meeting on Thurs 27th 8.15pm - 9pm (ish!) for parents in the UK and R.O.I.

Let's get together and connect! It's been a weird few years after covid and we are conscious that many families can feel isolated on this journey.

Our intention is to:
- Share some updates about 'Connect through Spelling' and spelling in the UK.
- Share what we are hearing from parents regarding challenges and potential ideas for support/ our current services.
- Be open to any ideas about how we can support families in the UK and R.O.I.

If you'd like to attend, send an email to [email protected] with subject header: 'ZOOM' and we'll send on a zoom link!

P.S We've had a crazy week - if we've not replied to your email, we'll get to it on Monday 🙌

One of the great parts of being a provider is getting to repeat lessons so many times across different students! I've really enjoyed discussing 'Harlem' this week, a poem that questions what happens to the dreams that we 'defer'. There is great imagery and symbolism - so many opportunities for use in spelling sessions!

(Here is a nice analysis of the people for anyone that wants to use it -

Where can I get stencils/ letterboards / laminate boards in the UK❓

Did you know Unlocking Voices (a UK based parent-led organisation) raises money to provide a FREE stencil pack to all new families? They can send them out to you via the post or we can give them to you in a session.

We also have a big stash of stencils/ laminates here if anyone ever needs additional sets. When we first started and needed to order stencil sets from America, it often meant a huge wait for them to arrive/ additional postage costs. Please help to get the word out to new families👏👏👏

👨‍👩‍👧“When should I start practising with my child?”👨‍👩‍👧

This is something we’re asked by parents all the time! Where possible, we encourage parents to get going straight away- you are your child’s/ adult’s best resource⭐️. Seeing a provider can be invaluable, but students need a high level of consistent practise to help them build their skill-set (and ultimately you want to be able to help them share their thoughts at home!).

We have a great online 1:1/group Enrolment Programme where we take parents through their first month of regular sessions. This is what we recommend as a first step - we have seen that parents/ students who come with a good understanding and have already familiarised with the method get SOOOOOO much more out of their sessions.

☀️☀️😎We’d love to run a group enrolment programme over the summer- get in touch if you’d like to get started as part of a group 😁

I'm having an admin morning in the office and getting ready for an intensive next week😍! I had a look at the recordings from his first intensive (2022) where we did just over 20 sessions over the course of a month. In his first session, he needed support to reach nearly every letter and by the last session was able to spell out sentences independently👏🚀! It amazes me at how quickly individuals can build their skills in a short time frame with the right accommodations and skill-building in place.

What worked well:
✅ We did an online parent enrolment programme prior to the intensive to help everyone familiarise with the approach! This meant that we could hit the ground running v.s spending time familiarising. (It also meant that his Mum came with a an established skill-set in place already, meaning that she took more value from the sessions too).
✅ We focussed on providing stimulating, back-forth lessons while building skills/ identifying areas to work on.
✅ We identified specific targets and addressed these one by one in the sessions. This helped to drive progression towards independence and expression.

We have had a few intensives since and he is doing fantastically!
I'm so looking forward to his next intensive 😀

GROUP SESSIONS

We love group sessions and watching friendships emerge! Jack and Ellen have been having regular joint sessions where they have chats, discuss ideas/ projects and have the occasional lesson.

We never know where their conversations will go, but we loved this spontaneous poem that they created together during their last session (with no planning!). Well done Ellen and Jack!
