Dyslexia and Dyscalculia assessments are carried out by Jayne Holland from a base in Sheffield. She is a graduate of English and is a qualified teacher with a specialist post-graduate qualification in Dyslexia. Jayne holds a British Dyslexia Association Practicing Certificate . No two people with Dyslexia are the same but almost all will experience some difficulty with reading accurately and fluently and with spelling correctly. A range of other difficulties may also be present. There may be visual stress, reversals of numbers and letters, slower processing speed, poor organisation, poor working memory, slow handwriting speed or difficulties with sequencing. Some people with Dyslexia excel at Maths , while others will struggle. There are also strengths in thinking skills and creativity associated with Dyslexia. Famous Dyslexics include Einstein, Churchill and John Lennon. Dyslexia is not related to intelligence or social and economic factors. There is, however, a lot of evidence that Dyslexia runs in families. A Dyslexia Assessment may sometimes uncover difficulties in the area of motor skills which are associated with Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder –DCD.) In this case an educational diagnosis of Dyspraxia is possible if the individual is aged 16+This would not be the same as a medical diagnosis of Dyspraxia. Younger children must be diagnosed by a medical specialist. Dyslexia and Dyspraxia can occur together. Jayne also offers assessments for Dyscalculia.Dyscalculia is a Specific Learning Difficulty which causes difficulties with developing a sense of number and with understanding the meaning of numbers. This impacts on being able to recognise and work with numbers in all areas of Maths and in everyday living. It can also cause problems with developing a sense of time and being able to tell the time. A Dyscalculia Assessment will help students, parents and teachers to understand the reason and nature of the difficulty and will provide strategies for supporting and developing number awareness both at home and in school. Like Dyslexia and Dyspraxia ,Dyscalculia is not related to intelligence or social and economic factors. A detailed assessment report will be produced within two working weeks. The report will reveal the pattern of strengths and difficulties. It will be used as the basis for a suggested teaching programme, and will inform suggested strategies for both home and school. If appropriate, exam access arrangements, such as extra time will be recommended. All Assessment Reports are conducted and written in accordance with DfE and SASC guidelines and are valid for applications for Disabled Students’ Allowance where applicable.* All assessments include screening for Visual Stress.

*All Higher Education Students living in England can apply for a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) if they have a disability including Specific Learning Difficulties such as Dyslexia or Dyspraxia (DCD.)

❌ From a very young age we’re taught to correlate spelling with intelligence. This is plain wrong.

✔️ Because despite many dyslexics being brilliant communicators, writers and storytellers… 89% of us struggle with spelling, punctuation and grammar.

💡 Here are easy ways we can all change this today:

1️⃣ At Work:
• Fellow dyslexics, own your spelling mistakes. I have a line in my email saying “ I’m Made By Dyslexia …expect creative thinking and creative spelling”, it works wonders!

• Bosses and colleagues… when you see spelling mistakes respectfully point them out, but think , not carelessness, AND expect creative thinking and creative spelling 💡

2️⃣ Education:
• Don’t stress over spelling tests. Do your best to help your child learn spellings… but also advocate for kids too, explain to them and their teachers that spelling is tricky for dyslexics, AND explain to teachers that they should expect creative thinking and creative spelling too!

• Ask your local school to & with our FREE training at https://aka.ms/learndyslexia. Because once they have, they will understand … and expect creative thinking and creative spelling💡

Sharing this so that any friends or their children with Dyslexia can be part of piloting the app which Jacobo is developing. He is only 14 and is doing an amazing job !

I am Jacobo, and along with my team at Activate, we have been developing, and designing a fun, and effective structure, to help dyslexics improve their reading and spelling in an incentivising way. We do this through short, bite-sized lessons (that users can complete anytime, anywhere) filled with fun interactive exercises that users can complete to make progress (while being incentivised at all times due to our designed game-thinking system).

Right now we are in the pilot stage, meaning that we are testing all the features, and parts of the app, in order to improve it around the needs, and interests of the dyslexia community. And, we would love to invite you to participate in the pilot testing - test out the app (for free), and give us your personal feedback on this early-stage product. Just to make it clear, we are only in a testing phase (we want to test out all the parts of the product) - meaning that it is free, and accessible to the whole community, and it is a very early stage product, where some features are not refined - help us improve it through the community’s feedback!
