Parents, is maths getting harder for your Year 9 pupil?
Year 9 maths can reveal difficulties that weren’t obvious before.

Your child might manage the first few steps of a question, then get stuck when fractions, negative numbers or algebra appear. Before long, they’re saying they don’t understand the whole topic.

In my small online maths groups, I look at their working to find out where that difficulty starts. We revisit the skills they need and practise using them in their current work.

Each student has their own online workbook, so I can see their answers and give individual feedback during the lesson.

They also have access to my learning portal, with short videos and practice to use between sessions. They can message me through it when they need help — something I wanted my students to have when the next lesson was still several days away.

Students can keep their camera and microphone off and use private chat to ask questions.

I’m Sandra, a qualified teacher with over 30 years in maths education. My groups cost £100 every four weeks, including the portal.

When a student knows what they want to say but struggles to put it into words, English exams can feel frustrating.

Our one-to-one English tuition gives students individual support from an experienced teacher and examiner.

Lessons can help students:

One mark you can try: Draw a vertical line downwards from airport E towards the coast.

Mark scheme: M1 for a line drawn due south from E, of any length. Measuring and using the scale are later marks.

Why are students not motivated to do maths?

I’m coming home from the Class Acts awards with something to celebrate 😊

I didn’t win an award last night, but **Grade 4 Maths received a Highly Commended recognition**, and I’m very proud of that.

I created Grade 4 Maths for students who find maths difficult. The ones who try hard but forget what they’ve learnt. The ones who have gaps they don’t know how to fill. The ones who have started to believe, “I’m just no good at maths.”

Helping those students take small steps forward means a great deal to me. Sometimes it’s a better result. Sometimes it’s asking a question they would once have kept to themselves, or having another go instead of giving up.

Of course I would have loved to win! But having that work recognised is a lovely reminder of why I keep doing it. And a huge bonus of the fantastic day of training and meeting so many fantastic people.

Thank you to the students and families who trust me to be part of their journey, and to everyone who has encouraged me along the way.

Back to Saltash now, and back to my students this week. 💙

“This confused me at school. Can we go over it?”

That’s a question I’m always happy to hear in my maths groups.

Sometimes a student needs another explanation. Sometimes we need to go back a step and work on something earlier. Having time to show me where they became confused helps us find a useful starting point.

I teach small secondary maths groups in my classroom in Hatt, near Saltash.

I look at individual working, answer questions and help students practise the skills they need for school and GCSE maths. They also have access to my online learning portal to revisit explanations between lessons.

I’m a qualified, experienced teacher, and I’ve built these groups around the difficulties I see students bring through the door each week.

Groups are available for Years 7–11 and cost £100 every four weeks, including the portal.
