Saltaire, WW2 years. Researched by Colin Coates, published monthly.
September, 1944
Including: THANKS TO SHIPLEY - letter to the Editor
Sir,—I should like to pay tribute to the truly wonderful hospitality afforded to the buzz-bomb evacuees from the East End of London, by the folk of Shipley and Saltaire.
I have visited my wife and child at Shipley and have nothing but praise and unbounded admiration for the manner in which these kindly folk have taken unto themselves complete strangers, and, in many cases, made them “one of the family.”
The adverse criticism which has appeared in the London Press of the treatment meted out to evacuees by the inhabitants of various reception areas, is at variance with my own experiences, and with those of all East Londoners who have their loved ones evacuated to Yorkshire.
JAMES F. BICKEND
London, E. 16.

WIFE’S ORDEAL - HUSBAND FOUND HANGING AT SALTAIRE
When Mrs. Louisa Elizabeth Rhodes, of 6 Victoria Road, Saltaire, came downstairs yesterday morning (26 August) expecting to find her husband gone to work, she found that the key was still in the lock and the door bolted.
She made a search of the rooms but found nothing until she felt a draught coming up the basement stairs. On going into the yard at the back she found her husband, Thomas Rhodes, a wool-sorter, hanging by the clothes line in a disused coal house.
It is stated that Rhodes, who was 58 years of age, has been in indifferent health since an operation about 15 months ago.

SALTAIRE SOLDIER KILLED
Never Seen Daughter

Mrs. Louie Smith, of 23 Jane Street, Saltaire, has received information that her husband, Lance Bombardier Ronald Smith, R.A., son of Mr. and Mrs. Emmanuel Smith, of 80, Hirstwood Road, Shipley, has been killed in action. ...

In civil life he was employed as a hairdresser at Marie’s, Leeds Road, Bradford. ...

Lance-Bombardier Smith leaves a daughter, aged three, whom he has never seen.

EMPLOYERS’ CALL FOR LENIENCY Workers’ Thefts

Pleas by two Bradford employers for leniency toward workmen who had admitted robbing them were made at Bradford City Court yesterday (13 July), but the Stipendiary Magistrate (Dr. F. J. O. Coddington), while taking note of them in his decisions, said that generally speaking his view in such cases, unless there were exceptional circumstances, was that the offenders should go to prison.

Harold Pilkington (39), a french polisher, of Ada Street, Queensbury, and Ernest Hoyle (29), a machinist, of Ada Street, Saltaire, both pleaded “Guilty” to thefts from Fred Holmes and Son (Bradford) Ltd., and a director of the firm described them as being his best workmen.

Pilkington was sent to prison for 10 weeks, and Hoyle was fined £7.
